Fandom and how I wish people could play nice.

I really don't know if it's just the sort of thing to create more wank, or to put me in the firing line of it.

It's not about anyone in particular, just me lamenting that people as a species don't seem to be able to play nice.

I'm just a little worried that people will think I'm bitching about them. It's not about that.

I really really loathe wank. I avoid it at all costs because it's just not worth the energy or the effort to argue with people over ridiculous things. I hate having to deal with it as a mod -- and because I run comms and an exchange, some people just seem to LIVE to cause trouble and carry on publicly. Their attitude is that being nice/courtesy is just political correctness. Not to me -- it's actually trying to be understand of other people's feelings and respecting them. Especially when you don't know them.

I really don't understand why people have to be so nasty to one another.

Oh yes. I've seen some of that Major Wank from the sidelines and it really shows the worst in people.
Some people just seem incapable of using good manners.

Other times it's much more subtle than that and it's all the little digs that just add up.

It's not just LJ or even just fandoms, you get it at work and in community groups, church groups, schools etc.

I'm sure there are lots of things I say that piss people off. I certainly don't claim to be above it all. But I do try to think about what I'm saying before I say it most of the time. And from the other person's view as well as my own.

It's not really anything in particular.
It's just a bunch of fandoms, here and on deviantArt.
The main wank is going straight over my head but I'm catching bits and pieces from the sidelines.

It was just more about me lamenting that humans as a species just can't seem to play nice. I really can't understand the urge to hurt someone else, either physically or emotionally so it baffles me that people will go there.

Ditto. I won't even ask. I'm wankaphobic that way.

And yeah, I don't really get some fandom tiffs either. I have my favourites - books, characters, pairings, fictypes, etc - but have never seen any reason to put down other people's favourites. Even when I don't understand them at all. If someone wants to write passionate Hagrid/Pince angsty songfic sonnets, hey, more power to 'em. As long as I don't have to read it ;)

Oh, it's not even one thing. There just seems to be a lot of the nasty going on right now in many places, not even all of it is on LJ.

Very good points which points to things that really be self-evident, but sadly aren't sometimes.

Concrit is a good example. People asking for concrit, but being unable to handle it. People being unable to give concrit that really is concrit.
Leaves one wondering.

Try not to let such things spoil your fandom fun; humans will be humans, and they are odd at times ...

Some people just either didn't learn manners or don't care to use them.

Most of the stuff I've come across isn't even that really, it's just petty things but it all adds up to nasty stuff.

I know some things can just be read wrong. Some people will take offence at things that were never meant that way. Especially on line when all you have to go on is the written word without inflection or body language.

Oh, it's not ruining my fandom fun really. I'm still drawing because I like it, I'm still reading fic because I really enjoy it.
I just sort of said my piece and moved on. It's not something that I dwell on.

I've no need to set you on people. Most of everything that made me roll my eyes wasn't actually directed at me. It's just that there's a fair bit of petty nastiness flying around right now in various places for various reasons.

I've seen friends get hurt from it and there really is no need to be that way.
