An unexpected gift.

I work in a 'quick-service restaurant' and on the days that I'm not running a shift, I usually end up running the back drive-thru window. Which means I get to talk to a lot of people over the course of the day. Today was no exception, I was back there for about 7 1/2 hours all together. Some of the people I see are regulars and we chat and joke with each other. Some are total strangers to me and it was one of them that gave me that 'unexpected gift'.

Since we've been having unusually cold weather for the past week or so, the main topic of conversation with my customers today was the temperature. Most of them wondered how I could stand being back there and sticking my hand out into the cold weather all day long. We do have a heater mounted above the window on the inside that streams either warm or cold air down on you as you stand there. But one lady, after we'd chatted about the temps and how we couldn't wait for it to warm up, said, as she was pulling away "You look very pretty today." I was speechless for a second and only had time to say "Thank you very much" before she was gone. But I was very touched by what she said because it's been a tough couple of months at work and there are days when I'm not sure how much more of this I can take. Mainly, it's there too much stuff that we have to do and never enough time to do it, and our manager has gotten crankier and more apt to suddenly start yelling at you for no apparent reason. Plus, she's always ready to tell you when you did something wrong and very rarely tells you when you did something right...or even bother to thank you when she's dropped some unexpected task in your lap and you manage to get it done, but then never hear that she appreciated your hard work. So when that lady said that, it just brightened my whole day right up! I just wish I could see her again and get a chance to tell her how much I appreciate her generous comment.
