I think this is the most disturbing section of the "$700b Title 1 bill authorising the treasury department to buy mortgage-related assets" being proposed to Congress as we speak:
"Decisions by the Secretary pursuant to the authority of this Act are non-reviewable and committed to agency discretion, and may not be reviewed by any court of law or any administrative agency."
Serious problem, people. Part of what was great about how this nation was orginally developed was the checks and balances system; from what I understand, our founding fathers wanted a system where decisions and authority was always able to be challenged, reviewed or checked back by another part of the system in an effort to prevent absolute power.
If Congress is doing something that is supposed to be so helpful and good to us, why the need for no reviews? Why feel you can't share the details of what you're doing with the public? Because if they posted their decisions on the internet or news and allowed a review system or some sort of form of transparency, I'd probably support this. But I just cannot, in good conscience, support a bill that would allow them to have authority and make decisions that are never subject to contrary opinion or discussion.
If you agree with me, please call your congressperson immediately and let them know. This is probably going to pass if people don't stand up and demand their government be accountable for their decisions and authorities.
Edit: I emailed Nancy Pelosi. Got an automated "Thanks for writing Your Congressperson" reply. Fucking bitch.
