Where are the uncool kids buying their computers these days?

While hunting up info re: the ATI video card class action suit (h/t madkiwi), I discovered the one I'm typing on at this instant is 5.5 years old, which seems a bit old in computer years. Last time I bought a non-Dell computer was 1994, but perhaps the retail computer market has changed since then? Also, the system I came up with based on Ars Technica's ( Read more... )

If you want a computer to play cool new games that will last a while, yeah, $1500 is what you'll be paying. If you don't want a computer to play games, why are you upgrading? :-)

Dell is where I bought my computer.

I'm not sure if 5.5 years old still qualifies as a modern system :)

I can't decide if I want to upgrade if I don't know how much it'll cost :-P but yeah, the $ probably isn't as important as the sheer irritation of having to clean up my current system.

Dell is certainly the easiest way, they have a great way of letting you pick and choose goodies.
I am penny pinching in my current laptop search, so will likely buy from overstock.com and save like $60. I also don't need the most super up to date since I mainly need it for facebook and word processing. You can get your hands on some at Best buy and then search for deals and reviews online.

When my previous system (bought in 2003) started crapping out earlier this year Best Buy had an HP Pavilion a6720y and 22" widescreen monitor for about $900 so I went ahead and got that.

I'm a Macboy, but, when I've needed Windows stuff, I've gone the whitebox route. Every Dell I've ever interacted with has pretty much turned me off through its massive flimsiness. If I were to buy a laptop-which would be the only reason I wouldn't do another self-assembled white box-I'd buy a Thinkpad, probably.

I periodically price new computers just to see if I really want to buy a new one - I probably won't buy one for at least 6 months, barring a catastrophe. I generally buy what Ars Technica calls a "hot rod" - the best computing you can get at a reasonable price - so I can keep it for many years. I may someday play games again.
