Where are the uncool kids buying their computers these days?

While hunting up info re: the ATI video card class action suit (h/t madkiwi), I discovered the one I'm typing on at this instant is 5.5 years old, which seems a bit old in computer years. Last time I bought a non-Dell computer was 1994, but perhaps the retail computer market has changed since then? Also, the system I came up with based on Ars Technica's system guide was $1500, which seems like a lot since I'm not entirely certain I'll ever play another computer game on my computer. I sorta vaguely want to play an RPG right now, possibly bc I don't want to sort laundry. I should note I'm also too lazy to organize my hard drive and take all my personal files off it and put them on the portable hard drive to be transferred to a new computer, which is why I probably won't buy a computer - I'm just curious :)
