In the Morning

All these years we've been single and proud of it and never noticed that two of us were, in effect, married all this time. - Four Weddings and a Funeral

Yeah, so Jack had said not to bother coming in before noon the day after Gwen's wedding disaster, but I had autopsies to finish and none of the corpses involved were getting fresher for me sitting around watching the clock. Whatever. There's just not much to do when you're dead.

So there I was, strolling into the hub at my usual time. Hell, I was early. No dragging it in at half nine for the dead boy, I was punctual.

Jack was at his desk pretending to do paperwork - I'd been here long enough to recognize the signs. I raised my hand as he lifted his head, but the smile on his face made the greeting stick in my throat, and I watched him turn toward Ianto as he emerged from ladder in the floor.

The Coffee King - sorry, Ianto, though it isn't as if he'll be putting me on decaf for calling him names - set down the jacket he was carrying as Jack grabbed him by the belt loops and pulled him close. Must've been one hell of a morning snog, as he looked more than a little dazed when Jack was done. He'd also done a number on Jack's hair - not that it isn't always carefully mussed in twelve directions. Still, he tried to smooth it out and I could hear the tone of Jack's playful whining carry across the hub as I moved to my computer.

I'd gotten the computer booting and was kicking back with a crossword to wait when Ianto's startled, “Jack!” rang through the hub. Myfanwy responded with a ruffle of wings and a scolding chirp, as if they'd disturbed her, but not enough to cause real concern. Jack had retaliated for the hair smoothing by nibbling on Ianto's neck, pushing aside the unbuttoned shirt and making his way along Ianto's collarbones until the younger man squirmed with laughter.

Jack's laugh echoed loud above their gentle murmurs and I lifted my head from the notes I'd begun to gather onto the computer. Myfanwy stuck her head out from her perch at the sound and let out a small chirp before settling her head against the side of her cave. She sighed and closed her eyes, clearly used to their morning antics.

They were staring into each other's eyes, and part of me wanted to drop a tray of instruments or something else - just enough to snap them out of a moment that suddenly felt more private than any of the compromising positions we'd managed to walk in on. (And there were plenty of those, not counting Tosh's secret stash of un-deleted CCTV footage. Right pervert, that girl, and I'm so very proud of her.)

Ianto was straightening Jack's collar, smoothing the fold to a crisp edge. Meanwhile, Jack's hands were moving slowly up Ianto's shirt, slowly pulling the pale purple fabric together as he did the buttons of the Snark Knight's daily armor. When he reached the top, he straightened the collar before reaching for the tie draped around Ianto's neck. Nimble fingers slid the ends of the fabric around in the loops of the elegant half-Windsor knot. Jack must have been saying something positively filthy as he tied the silk, as Ianto's eyes glazed and he flushed a lovely shade of pink. His hand drifted to smooth the knot and his eyes drifted closed as he leaned into Jack.. The two of them stood in silence for a moment, just leaning against each other and I turned away, grabbing my jacket and heading for the door.

Maybe Tosh would let me buy her breakfast and we could both be late to work. Dead men can do brunch.
