Greetings from the premiere of Pirates of the Caribbean 3.

... well, sort of.

The premiere was actually yesterday, but this young college journalism student was able to brave the crowds for a peek at the star-studded red carpet, and boy let me tell you... pirates and sea-creatures may be dangerous and exciting, but preparing for an event of that magnitude might be a far greater adventure.

To some die-hard fans, getting a good spot on the carpet means camping out overnight just to elbow your way into the best stretch of main street. For some, they just squeeze their way in later in the afternoon. Despite the angry exchanges and yelling over who got there first and why they're being squeezed and pushed around (and believe me, there were arguments like that all over the place), the cutthroat attitude payed off for some as the stars were abounding this year at the Disneyland premiere. We saw everyone from Masi Oka (Heroes) to Terri Hatcher (Desparate Housewives), Matthew Laurence (Boy Meets World), Michael Rosenbaum (Smallville), Cuba Gooding Jr., Chad Michael Murray (One Tree Hill), not to mention the stars of the actual film itself.

Depending where you are on the carpet, many of the Pirates 3 stars were more than willing to dish out autographs to adoring fans. If you were like me and happened to be on the latter part of the carpet, the main players went by right before the film was about to start and didn't have time to give out signatures. I will say, though, for the record, that Orlando Bloom seemed very sad that he couldn't stop for us. He gave many points and apologizing gestures as he was whisked by toward Frontier Land.

... for this girl who has had a large underground crush on Mr. Bloom for almost 7 years now, one glimpse was all it took. A smile and a wave toward me proved the one thing I wanted to know: yes, he is as handsome in real life than on-screen or in pictures. I KNEW it.

Johnny Depp was the last to walk by, and he probably caused the biggest ruckus amongst the fans. Women, children, men, young and old alike all went crazy when Mr. Depp walked by. It wasn't until that moment, when he himself, my own favorite actor by means of sheer talent alone, was standing in front of me, that I realized how much he has captured us all. As much as I understand that actors are just people like you and I, it was a surreal moment to be facing someone so brilliant at what they do.

They tore down what took hours to set up in a matter of minutes. As I sat on the steps of Disneyland City Hall and watched as the people filed out and the workers rolled up the red carpet, I thought about the impact a bunch of wild and crazy pirates have had on us all. They took what had been seen as dirty, nasty beings and turned them into characters we long for. No matter what you've thought about them before... I'll tell you one thing: it's a pirate's life for me. Yo ho.
