Wasn't that the tag line for the Sims 3? Anyway, I was reading someone's comment on someone's friends, friends, friends journal (you know how it is) it got me thinking about the different personal ways you can play the Sims 2. So here is a run down of how I play, and I'd be really interested to see if others do the same, or something completely

The age thing, I usually guess toddlers and kids the same. Teens, I see as from 13 to 17. They go to college at 17, and leave at 21. If they don't go to college, I see them as aging up at 18. I don't really go by the age bar when thinking like this though, but I do see Sim days as years in that respect.
The post adult transition "WAAHH.. College.." cry bugs the crap out of me too.
I like your idea of expenses. They make a lot of sense. (Man, The 'funeral cover/life insurance' ad's are annoying. I swear there were three in a row today. Can't remember what channel. They WERE on during cooking shows, must be only older people who watch them then. :P)
I don't have any inteen or ACR hacks in my game (More a matter of too complicated/I'm lazy then anything) but I can see the logic in that.
I think this is the longest comment I've ever written.. lol! :P

When I first played the game, pre University (the expansion pack, not me going lol) I just use to get so annoyed by how long the age went for. I'm glad I'm not the only one bugged by the 'I didn't go to College' cry.
I wouldn't be surprised if you saw three of those ads in a row. When it got to the point I could repeat them word for word, I stopped watching television lol.
I must admit, I couldn't play without inteen, I guess all the teenagers I've known/know must be a randy bunch lol. I've look at ACR and it looks awesome but I just don't think I could handle that much romance!

For the most part I used to have more traditional games. As in hoods in which my sims would actually work for their money and learn their skill, etc, etc, but I've never been too realistic about it. In some cases I think of each day as a year, because overall makes the most sense, but for me sim-world is sim world, therefore works very differently than real world, so I don't worry if the teen stage is proportionally longer or stuff like that (except for pregnancies, only coz they annoy the hell out of me, so those are usually a lot shorter!). Also, for the most part as well, my sims simply grow up in the blink of an eye, as it is in the game, I don't care much about making it subtle for storylines (unless needed in an specif case ( ... )

My cat is staring at me because I'm laughing so hard. Ah, the joy of sims, they really are under our control *mimic your evil laugh ;)*.
Until I wrote it all down I didn't realise how scarily realistic I make my game. I too in the earlier years of the sims use to begin a new neighbourhood every few months. Sim ADD can indeed be dangerous, I'm always fighting against the urge to play ahead of my story, it's a delicate balance lol.
I use to have imSim but if I remember, a while ago now, I had a blow up with downloads and when they said it was no longer supported I got worried. I'm using SimBlender which was what the site recommended instead. If only in real life we could choose out career position, age, and romantic relationships lol.

The idea of an independent teen as short, immature looking adult is absolutely awesome! I must admit though it is worrying to think of your Veronaville teens as just past ten years old lol.
I use to be happy with the motherlode too, but as you say, when all your sims are doing is banging each other, you start to look for alternatives :D You went to writing stories and I just made their life much, much harder lol.
Over the years I've definitely gone through stages in playing, there were times you couldn't move me from the computer (generally when I had much more important things to do), and other times, where I wouldn't load it for months. Now I'm stuck between wanting to play and writing at the same time lol.
