My Life in Brief

I started a new job two weeks ago, and I've found myself with no time to update Livejournal in any substantial way. I'll write all about the job (and the cushy cushy office) in an f-locked post later, but for now I have to say something I never thought I'd say: I'm sick of British accents. Seriously. I know! We're across the hall from the new ( Read more... )

Do you listen to "The Business" from KCRW? Perhaps that's the only show that's not mind-numbing. And NPR's Fresh Air sometimes hits on good guests, but only like once a week. Otherwise, I'm so on the "I don't get why anybody listens to music radio" bandwagon. Of course, this from the girl who's been in complete control of her listening pleasure since the iPod was invented. I find it's more rewarding to discover music organically, like through special events in your life that have a song playing in the background or album suggestions from friends and family or something you really liked from a movie or TV show that stood out in your mind. But you know that already ;)

I felt the same about Mad Men at first. It's easy to appreciate how beautifully done it is for the first few eps and not get totally into it, but by the end of the first season, I was definitely hooked. The last few eps truly build into a crescendo of deeply layered emotion and character development you rarely see in TV. It's... incredible. And the second season just rolls with that energy and builds even more on themes of societal issues and history and "ideal American" family dynamics... OMG I could write a thesis.

I prefer KPCC infinitely over KCRW for NPR. Granted, they don't play music best suited for a hookah party for three hours every morning, but they do have Marketplace, Day To Day (gone in March), and my favorite on the evening drive, The Story. Oh, and repeated airings of Cartalk and Garrison Keillor's show, as well as This American Life.

K, if you're looking for a new station, try the Sound at 100.3. They play a lot of the songs you don't hear anymore from our childhoods and teenage years, and even college for those of us old enough. I'm not fond of their "block" programming they seem to be adding more of though-- I don't need that much 70's music in a row-- I can find that elsewhere on the dial!

Oh, and I too got on the Mad Men bandwagon recently-- I bought the Blu Ray set of season 1 for $15. Nothing like a YoSafBridge in high def.

...I have a crush on Peggy.
