Let's see if the second try is more coherent, because LJ ate my entire first attempt. Hence why we're now a good two hours past my bedtime.
First of all, huge shout out to
kelleah because she wasn't able to come tonight.
sarumann and I went to see Band from TV perform at a dive bar in Hollywood. First of all: Best. Dive bar. Ever. Their drinks are strong (whew!) and they give you top-shelf liqour for bottom-shelf prices. The bar's called 3 Clubs, corner of Santa Monica and Vine.
I had about eight minutes to change after work tonight, so I threw on something comfy (and red! For the writers!) and headed out. Forgot my camera (darn!) but I thought, Ehh, whatever.
We got to the bar and finally got into the stage area. We had both the best spot and the worst spot. We were about 4-8 feet from the band (
Bonnie Somerville,
Greg Grunberg,
James Denton, the Bachelor from Season One - Bob- and the spot where Hugh Laurie would have sat if he'd been there) but we were constantly being jostled by people going in and out of the concert area since we were right next to the door.
First of all, I have to say: Band from TV ROCKS! Why? Because they gave a billion shout outs to the striking writers! They held up a WGA sign repeatedly and I screamed myself hoarse in solidarity.
Flash forward a few (great!) songs, and the night was going fine. The audio wasn't as good as when we saw them, Candace, but still good. So then I noticed something, and I turned to Josh and said "Hey, check out that guy to your right. The guy that looks like John Mayer. Isn't he someone famous?" To which Josh replied, "I think that IS John Mayer!" Hmm.
Ten minutes later, while the mystery man chilled right next to us, Bonnie Somerville takes the mike and says:
"And now, we've got a special guest! Let's welcome: JOHN MAYER!"
Totally serious, people. John freaking Mayer took the stage (barely five feet from us) and jammed with them for three songs. The crowd was freaking out. The first song was "Stand By Me" and the last two literally passed in a blur. I mean, seriously, John Mayer performed at a dive bar in Hollywood on a Thursday night. Who would have guessed?
After he left the stage, the band wrapped up and Josh and I ventured outside to the bar to chill for a bit. John was sitting at a booth about 10 feet away from us, and Josh got up the nerve to go up to him and tell him he was glad he came out to play for us. I stood there trying to blend into a wall. We also shook hands with Bonnie Somerville and told her how much we love her. Seriously, she's #2 on my list of heterosexual girl crushes (straight girls can have girl crushes, right?) with #1 being Jewel Staite. Just had to mention it.
So. Bottom line, Band from TV, John Mayer, happiness. I haven't listened to much John Mayer since college (and Rob) but I've always admired his talent. Now that I'm listening to his first few albums it's bringing back all kinds of college memories, and reminding me that he's not that bad.
Greg on drums, Bonnie singing with John Mayer, Bob's back. I was super lucky to get that shot of John while someone else's flash went off!
