From the Soul to the Song
Book One: Melody of the Ensouled
Verse Thirty Three

Heechul spun, completing a full circle with his sword brandished, but he saw nothing offering a threat to him. The only thing he could see was nothing at all; the entire space around him had turned pure white. It was a lot like being inside his own head, he decided immediately, but he that wasn’t where he was. Inside him, he felt Hankyung’s unease at the new situation.

Suddenly there was a flicker of color just beyond them and Heechul swung. A hiss followed and the blur ducked out of the way before it stilled and cleared enough that he could see it. “Some welcome that was brat,” Endellion hissed, giving a full body shake.

“What are you doing here?” Heechul asked cautiously.

Endellion settled onto the ground in front of him, his tail flicking lazily. “I came to offer you something if you would quit swinging at me long enough to hear it.”

“Offer us what?” Heechul asked lowering his sword. His wings twitched slightly in unease.

“You have done well. Keiran is weakened and his minions are few. You have both done your jobs. I come to offer you a reward.”

Siwon stared at Endellion. He wished he knew where Heechul had gone, or where everyone had disappeared to for that matter. More than that he wished he knew if he could trust the cat before him. “A reward?” he asked.

Endellion nodded. “Yes. You have done well. My brothers and sisters are gifting the reward to everyone right now.”

“What is it?” Siwon asked shifting uncertainly.

“We will take your abilities from you and erase your memories of ever having them. You no longer need the burden of them; you have completed your task. Just think Siwon. You would no longer be stuck in a crisis of faith, not knowing what to believe,” Endellion told him. Siwon sucked in a surprise breath at his words.

Kyuhyun’s wings twitched. Everything Zepherin had said sounded too good to be true. He couldn’t help but be wary of what she was offering. Within him Sungmin was weary as well but more than a little curious.

“You are offering to take our abilities from us?”

“Not take,” Zepherin corrected. “I will put them to rest again, and remove the memories of them ever having woken up.”

“What about us being fused? I’m not going to sacrifice Sungmin,” Kyuhyun said firmly.

“Don’t worry. We will undo that. Your Singer will be safe.”

~♪~♪♫♪~♪~

Kangin narrowed his eyes at Avanipala. “You can separate a fusion? Why didn’t you do that for Vidyagauri?” he accused.

“We could not,” Avanipala’s voice was covered in sorrow. “She needed to remain as she was so that she could share that ability with you.”

Kangin wasn’t sure he was comfortable with what was being said. Inside him he could feel that perhaps Leeteuk wasn’t either. “And Leeteuk’s back?”

“It will remain corrected. A miracle, as you will come to believe,” Avanipala told him warmly.

“I’m not unhappy with the way things are,” Shindong told Zepherin softly.

“Is that really the truth Shindong? Are you really alright with the way things are? With the fact that you will never be able to tell your family what you are and what you can do?”

Shindong had nothing to say to that.

~♪~♪♫♪~♪~

“Kanja focus,” Kibum’s voice growled out of their mouth.

“Sorry,” she giggled. “Your wings are just so interesting.”

“If we choose this,” Kibum asked calmly, “Donghae will never have to feel the pain of overwhelming emotions?”

“Nope,” Kanja spun in a circle. “And all of you will be free to pursue your dreams of a family. You won’t be tied to each other as you are now.”

Donghae had mixed feelings about that, and everyone inside him seemed to mirror them.

“So you will take it all and finish this battle for us?” Zhou mi rephrased everything Irirangi had told him.

The small dragon nodded. “We will take care of everything. You won’t need to worry about Dark Ones ever again. You will be free from this burden. I know it must be difficult for you to watch everyone.”

Zhou mi said nothing.

Henry wasn’t sure what he should do. He could see every one of the members of his group but something seemed wrong. They weren’t move and they weren’t attacking anymore. In fact it looked as though every one of them was having a private conversation with something they could only see. Around them Dark Ones stood, simply waiting, while Keiran hovered above everything smirking as if he was entirely pleased with himself.

Even if Henry could leave his protective shield, something he couldn’t do, he had no weapon to fight with. All he had was his violin and he wasn’t sure that would help them at all. With nothing else he could do, Henry continued to do his part. He continued to play.

~♪~♪♫♪~♪~

Yesung narrowed his eyes. He didn’t like the fact that he couldn’t see anyone else. A decision of this magnitude should be done as a group, as it would affect everything.

“Don’t worry Yesung, everything will be fine. I promise that Ryeowook will be safe and he will have no memory of everything you have asked of him. Neither will you. Things will go back to how they once were, just roommates,” Irirangi told them.

Inside him Ryeowook seemed alarmed. He didn’t like the prospect of what was happening any more than Yesung. Their eyes fluttered closed for a moment. When they opened again it was with Yesung’s abilities fully unbound and functioning and he finally understood.

Yesung smirked then. “You know what? Even if you really were Irirangi I would tell you the same thing. Fuck you.” Yesung reached out and took hold of the rainbow strands of weaving that had shimmered brightly the moment he opened his eyes. With a twist of his hand and a sharp jerk, he ripped them apart.

~♪~♪♫♪~♪~

In the air Keiran screamed, a noise filled with pain. The members of Super Junior stumbled as if waking from a dream and gazed around confused. Yesung was the only one who seemed completely aware of what was happing.

That awareness couldn’t help him however, when Keiran moved so quickly that he seemed to disappear. When he reappeared he was standing in front of Yesung, with the man’s neck firmly held in one hand. Keiran’s hair was messed and his eyes had turned completely black. His features were contorted with pain. His hand tightened around Yesung’s neck. “We could have done this the easy way. I would have given you all years before I came to collect your Songs,” he hissed dangerously.

Yesung’s fingers scrabbled frantically at his arm, trying to relax Keiran’s hold and allow air back into his lungs. Sneering Keiran relaxed his hold just enough that Yesung could gasp in air. “Now I will just take what I want.”

The other members of Super Junior sprang into action to rescue their fallen comrade. Every weapon they threw at Keiran, bounced off harmlessly, as if the man was contained within a protective shield. The Dark One snarled, irritated, and turned his head to look at the other members. A moment later there were several cries of alarm, as the member froze where they stood.

“Yesung!” Kangin called and then screamed as white hot pain shot through his system.

“Leave them alone,” Yesung managed to whisper. “They didn’t do anything. I broke your Weaving.”

“Oh they have done enough,” Keiran sneered, “but you are right. I should start with you.” He reached forward with his free hand and curled his fingers around the edge of one of Yesung’s wings. Yesung had only a moment to panic before Keiran’s hand tightened his grip and jerked. The sickening sound of bone cracking and breaking was covered by the combined screams of Yesung and Ryeowook.

Yesung’s scream shifted quickly into a soft whimper, he wouldn’t give Keiran the satisfaction of hearing a prolonged scream. Inside him Ryeowook was blinded with pain and was openly sobbing. Even if Yesung had been able to figure out what sort of Weaving would help him, he never would have been able to create it. The pain was much too great for him to do anything.

Keiran’s hand settled on his other wing and Yesung frantically though of what he could do, of anything that could save them. He knew that if he couldn’t do anything, the rest of his friends would be powerless to stop what was happening. There was another sickening crack and the pain barely registered in his head. A short scream passed his lips before he could bite it off and Keiran laughed.

Within him, Ryeowook was screaming constantly now, as if something was tearing him in two. The sound of his pain and the fact that Yesung could do nothing about set him on an edge that he had never been on. He opened his senses as far as they would go in a last desperate attempt, and heard the world rush in. He knew what he needed to do.

~♪~♪♫♪~♪~

Henry was terrified at what he was seeing. He had always known from the feel of his Song alone that Yesung was the strongest of all of the members. If Keiran had captured him so easily and he could do nothing, they didn’t have a chance. He was the only one not currently captured by Keiran and there was nothing he could do. His only weapon was his violin and it was useless.

He didn’t stop playing and he couldn’t look away from what Keiran was doing. He didn’t feel he had the right too. Where were the people who had trained them? Where were the Light Ones who had taught them?

~♪~♪♫♪~♪~

“I have to go, Junsu open a portal,” Yunho snarled.

‘You cannot,’ Avanipala said sternly. ‘You are no match for him either. We cannot afford to lose your team.’

Jaejoong rounded on the five light ones that were there. “You would just let them die then?! They are just pawns to be thrown away?!” Hyunjoong stepped up behind him ready to support them.

Kanja whimpered and Zepherin tucked her under her wing. ‘Do not speak of what you do not understand child,’ Irirangi hissed.

‘The best thing you can do for them right now is to watch and remember,’ Avanipala told them gently.

Yoochun had tears running down his cheeks as he turned and fixed his eyes back on the view of the battle that the members of SHINee had created for them to watch through. Jaejoong narrowed his eyes, but said nothing as he allowed Yunho to guide him back to his place, to watch and hope for something none of them thought possible.

~♪~♪♫♪~♪~

The change in Yesung’s Song was so small that Henry almost missed it. It was only a tiny hiccup before it his Song returned to its normal feel. He couldn’t even really be sure of the interpretation of it. It felt as though it was questioning, wanting, and searching for more power all at the same time. Henry had no idea what Yesung planned to do with more power, but it was something that he could help with. Sangita had trained him to play the Songs of the things around him but even the few extra Songs he could hear he didn’t think would be enough. They needed more than that.

The words that Sangita had said to him before they had left floated into his head, “Never forget that all you need to do is ask and all of the Songs of Creation will answer.” Henry wasn’t sure who to ask or how to ask but if there was ever a time that they needed help it was now.

‘I’m not sure if I am doing this right,’ Henry thought. He wasn’t sure where to try to send his thoughts, so he attempted to send them everywhere. ‘But we need help. We are trying to protect everything on the Earth but Keiran is winning and we aren’t strong enough to stop him. If anyone can hear us answer please.’

Henry waited for something sort of response but when none came he was disappointed. That had been their last real shot and nothing had happened. He was frantically trying to think of something, anything else when he felt a Song bubbling up. It was quiet at first, almost tentative, as if it was afraid he couldn’t or wouldn’t want to handle it. He reached for it and the moment he did, it surged into him. Henry staggered backwards; overwhelmed by the sheer power of what he was hearing. He understood everything instantly. Knowledge of things that he had never thought to question filled his mind and he shoved it to the side, ignoring it.

The Song was what he wanted. It was powerful, teeming with billions of individual Songs all woven together as one. Henry knew it was the raw power of Creation offering to help them and all he needed to do was play it. He didn’t think that he could handle that sort of power being flowed through him, but even if it killed him he would play it.

He took a deep breath and then the song that he was playing shifted from the Song of Super Junior, to a Song much deeper and laced with power; the Song of Creation.

~♪~♪♫♪~♪~

Yesung felt the shift the moment Henry began to play. Power bubbled forth, a slow trickle at first that built and built until it was a rushing flow ripe for use. The power would kill Henry if left alone, but Yesung didn’t intend to leave it like that. He reached for it, letting it flow into him and fill him with its warmth.

In a matter of moments he was full of power, but he continued to take it and force it into himself. It didn’t matter what happened to him, as long as they could destroy Keiran with them. He could feel the agreement from Ryeowook, who had managed to stop screaming as the first tendrils of power had entered them ‘I love you,’ Yesung heard from deep within him. Yesung couldn’t risk the loss of focus to return the love, but he knew it didn’t matter. Ryeowook knew he was loved.

The power within him built and built until he was feeling so overly full that it hurt. It burned from the inside out, quite possibly worse than anything he had ever felt, certainly worse than any sort of physical pain. His head lulled and his eyes fluttered as he fought to remain conscious.

Keiran cackled. “Not so tough now are you little Spinner of Spirit. I can’t wait to taste your Song.”

Yesung’s head rolled forward after a moment and his eyes opened. They were glowing bright silver as he fixed them on Keiran. He weakly lifted a hand and placed it on Keiran’s arm. “If you want our Song,” Yesung said, his voice was laced with a strength that was not his own. “Then you can have it.”

The power that had been building inside him bubbled fourth and raced to the part of Keiran that was already reaching for his Song. Yesung let it rush in, all of it, the combined power of Super Junior and the strength of all of Creation. He opened the river between them, letting the power flow from Henry, through him and into Keiran.

Keiran laughed. “What power,” he cooed as the power began to fill him. It took him a minute to feel that anything was wrong. In shock he leapt backwards, releasing Yesung. The Spinner fell into a crumpled heap on the floor, fighting for consciousness. Keiran’s actions made little difference. The connection was already established, and Yesung wouldn’t let it go.

Screaming, the Dark One tried to form a portal, create a Weaving, anything to burn off the massive amounts of power within him, but he found that no matter what he tried he was helpless. Around him, the lesser Dark Ones back up in fear and vanished as they fled for their lives. Keiran screamed again, louder this time, and clutched at his head. It was all too much, the pain, the power, everything was too much.

His eyes snapped open in surprise and his body began to glow a bright rainbow of colors. Then, with a final scream, he exploded in a shimmer of light and was no more.

~♪~♪♫♪~♪~

Blood ran down Henry’s fingers, staining his pure white violin a deep red. From his shoulders a pair of wings trembled. They had formed the moment he had begun to play, a black skeletal outline of dragon wings with webbing that shimmered in every color stretched between it. Despite the blood and the pain that he was in he continued to play for as long as he was needed. Only when Keiran seemed to explode into nothing did he give into his body’s desires and still his hands.

Around the arena his group members fell from where they had been held by the Prince of the Dark Ones, into crumpled heaps on the floor as if all the energy had been drained from them. Henry knew that, in essence, it had been. He had felt Yesung take all the energy they had had to offer and then some, all of it freely given. He hoped that none of them were anything worse than exhausted; he was much too tired himself to see if he could even hear any of their Songs.

Everything was quiet compared to just a few moments ago. The silence curled around him and welcomed him, beckoning him to rest. A moment later Henry slumped onto his side giving into the pull of his exhaustion and drifting to the land of unconsciousness.
