VIGNETTE: Everything Was Yyth

Mar 01, 2009 17:30

Date: Day 25, Month 1, Turn 19
Location: Snowasis, High Reaches Weyr
Synopsis: In preparation for Yyth's flight, K'del gets very, very drunk.

K'del knew that today was the day.

It was hard to miss, after all, the way all Cadejoth could think about was YythYythYyth; K'del worked it out pretty early on, and panicked. It had been one thing to think about it in an abstract, to know that Yyth would rise and, unless he was really strong willed about it all, Cadejoth would chase. And to do that... that wasn't fair. Cadejoth would never refuse to let him chase after the girl he wanted.

But today? Today?

He managed to get through morning drills without too much of a hassle and, thankfully, was not rostered to anything else for the afternoon. He found himself in the Snowasis after lunch, downing shots of whiskey; after four or five, he paid for the rest of the bottle, swallowing it straight.

The alcohol, he reasoned, would make it all easier. Blunt his senses. Make it feel less awful. And if Cadejoth actually won - well, maybe he wouldn't remember any of it, afterwards.

Usually, Cadejoth would express his distaste after only a couple of drinks, but today, it was as though he hadn't noticed: everything was Yyth. The sun was Yyth, the moons, the stars. Yyth. Yyth, Yyth, Yyth.

K'del drank on.

He was provisionally aware at the subtle change, when Cadejoth dove from his ledge, to follow Yyth, to wait for her to take to the feeding grounds. K'del stayed where he was, drinking more, until they started to feed. Then, and only then, very slowly, did he begin to make his way towards them.

It was going to be a long night.
