'No Exit'
First off, OLD SCHOOL CYLONS. Yay!
Hmm...odd little episode. Really quick pacing but it was a lot of dialogue. I now a lot of people don't like it (I certainly hated the way it was at the beginning of The Tempest which we read for class this week. Get on with it, Prospero!), but I...well it was kind of nice. After so much action, it made sense to see how thing lulled in the time between. Rather curious why Sam was only then having the bullet removed though Saul and Caprica tell us it has been a week since the bloody failed-coup.
Ok, to the main focus of the episode. ELLEN. Ok, wow Kate Vernon. WOW. She had a total personality switch that made the Bill/Saul switch look tame by comparison. And yet I totally bought it. I really, really like her now, which is funny because I had written her part up in 'New Life, New Caprica' and ended up making her braver and more compassionate. She is obviously highly intelligent...and apparently so are Saul, Galen, Sam, and Tory, though Tigh being brilliant is a bit of a stretch for me XD. The things she explained, about creating John/Cavil, how she was trying to make them more Human (perhaps ending the cycle of war? Break the prophesy).. She is so loving and motherly and I can't wait to see how she interacts within the Fleet
Anders...ok, ouch. All of that was ouch. I kinda liked how Hybridish he acted. Creepy! Bald!Anders was weird too see. Poor man was in the makeup chairs for like 9 hours each time he had to be bald, but he preferred that to actually shaving his hair off. Kara in scrubs...totally different person I think. She looked like she could have easily taken a different path and been a medic. Wouldn't that have been interesting?
Now, I gotta say it, thought it really doesn't matter. The PC Doc says that Sam is currently suffering from Aphasia. He mentions “word salad”, which if I remember correctly from my language acquisition class is connected with Wernicke's Aphasia. A W-Aphasic will indeed spout nonsense, however it is grammaticaly correct nonsense, like saying “di gooden rashted en di pravally tranha”. It's gibberish, but the word forms (in this case of English) correspond to real english (note the -ed and -ly forms used in my example). However, Sam seems to have moments of perfect clarity and speech, which I asked the professor about. She said it is very hard to study how bad the damage is because WA's never seem to get these moments Sam has. So not quite accurate, LOL. Who would have though college would inform my fandom? At least they had him shot in the right place to have Wernicke's area damaged (its lower in the brain, though now that I think about it..Sam seems to not have been shot in Wernicke's area...w/e)
So, anyway, before I got excited about knowing what Aphasia is....I'm sure the fans who pegged Cavil as mastermind for something he was keeping secret, gratz. John, huh? Such a plain name, but I think it fits. Of course there is also Cavil acting like a deranged child whose jealousy lead to him murdering his gentle, creator-pleasing brother.(well hai der notsosubtle!Bible reference.)
So many reasons for the Cavilship scenes rocking. Was talking to Tzikeh, who told me about Jean-Paul Sartre's work, often titled No Exit. Basically No Exit is about two women and a man stuck in a room in hell. The man is arrogant, cowardly, and a bit angry (Cavil). One of the women is blond and cheated on her husband (Ellen) and the last one is bi (guess its only Boomer by default). “Hell is other people” indeed. We get some nastyness out of Cavil and some smartass comments out of Ellen, which just pisses Cavil off. My favorite being her smirking comment about having first hand knowledge that Saul is indeed a man. Add in the cute scene of Saul/Caprica and my only thought was: “What is it with the Bromance and being really sexed?” LOL. Those boys got it going on, don't they?
Laura and Lee...another lovely scene. Jamie does a good job of acting a lot like Eddie does as Adama around Laura. His puppy dog eyes just about slew me (along with memories of towel!Lee). I loved the exchange between them, especially when Laura says he was “always the right one” if a bit too into leading with his heart to do the right thing. His smile and comment about being “smarter and wronger”. MY HEART DIED HERE>.DIED I TELL YOU! Breaks my heart, because Laura dying is becoming more and more apparent. Her Captain Apollo is with her though!
Ok now Galen and Adama scenes. “we have to accept what we are”. Ok Bill, now accept that you have a pills and booze addiction and move our of it. Seriously Old Man, you are making me nervous and totally not helping my suspicion that Bill dies from and OD after Laura dies of Cancer.
Now, best line ever? “all I got is a....Galen.”. OMG PAPADAMA ILU. Such a cute, cute line from one of the most badass men in the entire show. He's about to say Cylon, but instead says Galen. I love that hesistancy and how he is actively trying to get over the whole Cylon thing. Its the same with racism irl, even if you don't belive in racist ideas, you are still aware of them and have to actively resist such thoughts sometimes. Gah I love the Old Man.
Now I have to thank RDM and the writers for my fav fav fav part of this whole episode. BOOMER. I wanted so badly to see a resolution to her story and here is the apparent beginning. The speech about letting go of humanness and being a machine was funny considering who taught her that...Cavil is VERY Human in his anger and jealousy, and his “student” does it better. Ellen is so wonderful in getting her to react with emotion and then BOOM. Boomer gets in a raptor (wait,, a Raptor?!) and escapes with Ellen to Galactica. I cannot wait to see if Adama recognizes her before she says who she is....omg plz plz have them confront what happened and perhaps we can see Adama be the soft heart he is and forgive her for the shooting. I don't see it as too far fetched. She did scream at the Cylons for making her hurt someone she loved. And she WAS unable to control herself, seemingly checking out of her body while it happens. I wonder if Adama realizes she shot herself in an attempt to save him?
Still, awsome episode. Wonder what implications Galactica being upgraded with the resin will do. Anyone else want me to write the fic in my head right now, with Galactica 'talking' to Adama via ship noises?
QUESTIONS:
1. What happened to the thugs that murdered the Quorum? I'm assuming Captain Kelly saw their faces, and I can't see Adama letting men like that live.
2. Why is Sam just now getting the bullet removed?
3. Has Laura started Diloxin? It doesn't look like it.
