Great job!. Actually I have used black plastic [looks like your stuff] on the ground to prevent grass regrowth. I usually put a few layers of newspaper [which eventually disintegrates] then the plastic. It works very well. In a large garden I had, I used that method to make paths [which I then covered with pine chips]. I also used that on the little hill behind our present house.

Here it was almost warm today [9°C], but tomorrow it will drop to -5°C, and they predict around 9cm of snow...

We have discovered that half our garden is swamp... might also be related to the weather we've been having though. Contemplating planting an alder to take care of some of it... if only it wasn't such a boring tree.

But a river birch might be just right, and yes, much more interesting.

Indeed, a red maple [not Japanese] would probably grow too large for a small garden. River birches are attractive and not overpowering.
