Blue Castle: A Mouse Gnawing In Her Chest (PG)

Jan 01, 2012 17:10

Summary: In a shameful, private little corner of her heart, Cecily raised up an altar to unbeautiful, skittish, kind Valancy Stirling.

Notes/Warnings: Canon counterpoint - I do not guarantee this story will make sense without having read the book. The title is from a quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson, describing symptoms of tuberculosis. Beta-thanks go to Kay and Stef, for looking this over and suggesting tweaks as necessary. And Yuletide thanks go to ainosenshi for asking for this pairing, which I'd never even thought of!

Link: Valancy was thin to the point of being scrawny, with nothing round and comfortable about her; her oddly slanted eyes watched everyone around her with a pinched, worried look, like a cat that wants a hand to pet it but knows it's more likely to get thrown across the room; and she wore her old-maid-ish clothes with an awkward air, as if they had never quite become comfortable no matter how long she wore them.
