Jasper Hale knew shame. After all, he had lived with it every day. From the moment that Isabella Swan had arrived in their home, warm and vulnerable, she had been in acute danger. Her blood acted as a siren call and Jasper’s fears were confirmed on more then one occasion. He was weak, undeniably so. The flash of uncertainty in Edward’s eyes confirmed it each time he drew near the reckless girl.
Even now Bella glided past, cold and ethereal as the rest of them, Jasper felt a twinge of self-loathing. There, in her blood-red eyes, he saw himself.
