Student Protests Tie up Campuses in Puerto Rico

BTW, the governor's quote is wrong. Well, what he said is incorrect.

The professors are in favor of the strike. The faculty organizations have over and over agreed with it. Even the non-faculty staff and their organizations have also agreed. Most of them have, in fact, been on strike, too.

Heck, the most telling thing is this... Yesterday, the head of the Arecibo campus stepped down her position after the main Chancellor basically fired her (he "removed his trust" from her). Later in the day, the head faculty in that campus had a meeting, and the deans all stepped down as a block in response to what happened and in support of their immediate boss.

General Student Assemblies have been called, sometimes multiple times. Students in their respective campuses are allowed to participate. They vote, not just the officers, but all of them. Barring one irregularity, the results have always been in favor ofthe strike. They want the students to follow democracy, yet when it works in their favor, they're against it?

Now, multiple times people have said "Oh, but those poor students who are against the strike, they do not want to go to the assembly, lest they be heckled." What? What the fucking what? The other students ARE being heckled not by their peers, but by administrators, police, and government. And they are voting in favor of continuing that. And people say they're afraid those "poor students", who, according to them should be the majority may be heckled? Leaving aside who's in favor of what... that's...cowardice. And that is a cowardly position. And it speaks against an organization that lacks the will to stand up and voice its opinion, however unpopular it may be.

Also, again, if they truly are a majority, they could have organized and gone to the assemblies and voted in block. And if they're the majority, won. But they haven't done that. Besides the fear mentioned above, there is a distinct lack of leadership. This strike is not wildly organized. This strike has multiple committees in all campuses coordinating activities, calling for assemblies, using regular and alternative media to express their opinions. They're very well organized. Where is the leadership of the opposition? Again, it does not speak favoribly of the minority if they cannot organize.

And as to the heckling remarks... Hey, modern things are awesome. That is how videos are now taken and uploaded to YouTube. Digital cameras on cell phones are a wonderful thing. But hey, perhaps they lack those nifty things... Well, dammit, old portable recorders still exist, and they could, say, take it to the meetings and record what is spoken there, then pass it on the radio to show the world how they've been heckled. Why is it that I, who am in favor of the strike, have to come up with ideas to help the opposite side?
