the air was so crisp today

my bus ride home today was sort of surreal.

I realized (while waiting for the bus) that I think I've perfected my "don't mess with me" face. I tend not to have problems with undesirable people approaching me and asking for change or bothering me or trying to sell me drugs or whatever because I probably look pissed off to the point of taking someone's head off if they come near me. I guess it works.

of course, when I'm sitting on the bus, it's a different story. people don't necessarily talk to me, but I'm a prime target as someone to sit next too. I think it's because female + small = non-intimidating. apparently. I suppose it's also that I don't take up very much space, so I don't intrude into other people's sitting bubble.

now to the surreal part.

at about 3rd and pine, I noticed a loud chirping noise (not a cooing noise like pigeons would make), and assumed that since I was in the middle of downtown, it couldn't be birds. I mean, c'mon, there're like 4 trees total on part of the street, and they're piddly. I thought it must be the electric cables that power the buses making funny noises.

but no.

there were literally hundreds of small birds flocking in those four trees, filling the sliver of space between the buildings. they reminded me of the cicadas in japan. the noise and the sight. but it was eerie with the gray, darkening sky above them.

just something that caught my attention.
