I spent last night with Kristi and Dene. Originally, we had planned to go to Knotts Berry Farm, to take advantage of the 1/2 price after 4pm deal. We ended up getting a late start and decided to figure out alternate plans. The second idea was The Magic Castle. Dene had a guest pass that one of her clients gave to her. We decided that it was too late and too difficult ( dress code) to deal with last night. The third and winning idea was the Pirate Dinner Adventure in Buena Park.
We spent the entire time in traffic practicing our "Arrs!!!". When we stood in line for tickets, numerous other people were also "Arring." Much to our disappointment, the pirates did not "Arr" once during the show. However, to our delight, they used "Wench", "Booty" and "Ahoy."
The first thing that happened when we walked inside, was we had our picture taken with a hot barely legal pirate. The picture is pretty funny and I plan on posting it on my myspace page. We then watched a preshow. The preshow introduced all of the pirates. We were on the purple pirate's team...meaning that for no apparent reason, we were supposed to cheer for him. I thought all of the pirates were on the same crew?!?!?! When he was called, we followed him into the dinner arena.
The set was cool, but kind of confusing. I should point out that we spent the entire evening mocking the whole thing. The set was a giant ship. However, inside of the ship was a moat and then the main portion of the ship. A moat inside of the ship??
Dinner started right away, with Salad. Kristi and I started drinking right away and Dene was envious. If you go to this show, you need ton's of alcohol. Tons. As we were eating, our Pirate roped us into one of the audience participation portions of the show. We were picked to compete against other women in a three person race to find our teams flags and raise them. After getting the specifics, we drank more.
The show started with as the main course was being served- Beef, Chicken and Shrimp, potatoes, mixed veggies. It was decent.
The show was vague. It has a very loose plot of the pirates having captured a princess and a gypsy girl. The youngest pirate and son of the captain, falls in love with the princess and tries to save her. As this main story line was plodding along, the pirates sang and had various competitions. The gypsy girl was made to dance and do acrobatics. There was point where the captain let the pirates "Have their way with her." Every so often, they would have an audience participation point or randomly break into songs. The songs were like 80's ballads or bad musical theatre. Loads of gratuitous nudity, with the gypsy girl loosing her skirt and all of the pirates bare chested by the end of the show. On a whole, the thing didn't make any sense and was silly.
Dessert was apple pie ala mode. Dene and Kristi also got a birthday cake for me. It was decorated with pirates and palm tress. Also, prior to the show beginning of the show, they read my name off with the other people celebrating birthdays. Kristi admitted that she wished that they had embarrassed me more.
I had fun, mainly because I was spending time with good friends. The show was bad...but bearable with enough alcohol and right attitude. The pirates weren't so bad to look at either!
