Part Seven
She couldn't stop shaking. She was in the backseat of the Jeep, Edward in the seat next to her. Emmett was behind the wheel, driving way faster than he should be, Edward occasionally spouting out an instruction to slow down or take a certain road. He seemed to be concentrating intently on something, though she had no idea what since he appeared to be staring at the back of the seat in front of him, which meant he couldn't even see the road in order to give Emmett any instructions. Despite Edward's lack of attention to the actual road, Emmett was still following all of his brother's directions. The other guy, the red-eyed guy that seemed to be named Demetri, was in the passenger seat, occasionally shooting a look back at her. Jasper and another guy, a very large man that Angela had only seen from a distance as he stood in the doorway of the library, had been left behind.
"Do you have a blanket to give her? She's shaking badly," Demetri said suddenly, and when Edward responded in the negative, the red-eyed man moved so quickly she barely saw it, removing his long coat, then thrusting it toward the backseat. "Here."
Her hand shaking visibly, Angela reached out to take it, but Edward got to it first, quickly moving to bundle her up in the heavy garment... Wool, it felt like. Far better quality than her own jacket. Clutching it to her, she looked over at the young man that she'd once considered a friend... Someone she'd barely spoken to in well over a year.
"What's going on, Edward? Who were those people? And how did you... How did you know to come? And how are Jasper and the other guy - Felix, I think you said - how are they going to get back? Did you have another car, or-"
"So many questions, little one," Demetri intoned. She wasn't sure what to make of his expression as he looked back at her. It was too dark to really see it very well. In this light, his eyes still looked odd, but she couldn't tell they were red like she could before in the light of the library office.
"Wouldn't you have questions?" she managed to ask despite the fact that this man frightened her almost as much as the people that had come to kidnap her. Even knowing that he had shown up alongside Edward and Emmett Cullen didn't really quiet her fears. There was just something about him... Something deeply unsettling. The fact that he'd moved so quickly in taking off his jacket as well as the knowledge that his coat wasn't warm from his body heat like it normally would be didn't do anything to calm her, either. She was trying not to think about how fast Edward had moved earlier, either... From the library office to standing next to the Jeep in what felt like the blink of an eye.
"She's got a point, you know. Considering what just happened," Emmett commented, glancing toward the backseat as he did so, something that had to be incredibly dangerous given the speed at which he was driving. She couldn't see the speedometer from where she was sitting - when Edward had ushered her into the vehicle he'd put her behind the driver's seat - but she knew that he was going well above the speed limit just with how quickly they zipped past the few landmarks that she was able to make out. Angela couldn't imagine driving this fast, especially at night, but Emmett seemed completely at ease as he gave her a slight smile then turned his attention back toward the road. Neither Edward nor Demetri seemed the least bit concerned with Emmett's driving, either.
"I understand. But it's probably best to get off the road before we really get into anything. Not to mention I would like for Jasper and Felix to get back before we explain it all," Demetri replied, and Angela frowned, looking over at Edward, finding him watching her carefully. He looked like he expected her to run screaming, which... Kind of difficult to do when she was in a massive vehicle that she was pretty sure was currently going at least a hundred miles an hour, maybe more.
"Where are you taking me?" she asked him, and Edward gave her what was probably meant to be a reassuring look. To be fair, it almost did the job, and it probably would have if they weren't in a situation where Edward and the others had shown up out of nowhere to save her from kidnappers that apparently had some sort of special powers.
"We're taking you back to the house, at least for now. Alice and Bella will be there. They're waiting for us to bring you home with us," Edward told her, and Angela let those words settle her a bit. Just knowing where she was going helped. She'd only been to the Cullen house once, the night of the graduation party that Alice threw what was now about a year and a half before, but at least she'd been there. She knew where it was. And the knowledge that Alice and Bella would both be there helped. She hadn't seen Bella since her marriage to Edward, but they'd exchanged emails, and Alice was still a friend. It had only been a week or so since she'd seen her.
"Do Alice and Bella know what's going on?" That was Angela's next question, wondering if her friends knew more than she did. Because she truly had no idea what was going on and why those weird people had come after her or what made them think she was some sort of Chosen one.
"They're aware. Though to be entirely fair to them... They found out when Emmett, Jasper, and I did, and we came here as soon as we knew, so neither of them were hiding anything from you. I promise you that," Edward told her, reaching out to take hold of her hand, probably trying to comfort her, and she didn't even care that his hand was cold; she held onto it like a lifeline.
"Those people... They wanted to kidnap me, I think. They didn't want to kill me," she said quietly, and she could have sworn she heard Demetri mutter something that might have been the word 'yet', but she wasn't certain. Given the glare that Edward suddenly sent to the back of Demetri's seat, she kind of thought she was right.
"They aren't going to get to her, Cullen," Demetri said after a moment. "I have done this before, you know. I'm quite good at it. That's why I'm here."
"The man that spoke to me. He said I was Chosen. Like it should mean something or like it was important."
"It is important. And we will tell you," Demetri told her, turning back to look at her as the vehicle pulled into a long driveway. The Cullens' house. They were there far more quickly than they should have been, thanks to Emmett's driving. Honestly, she was a little shocked that he'd gotten them there all in one piece.
"Emmett's a very good driver," Edward assured her, almost as if he could hear what was going on in her head. As she turned to look at him, his expression turned a bit rueful, then he nodded toward the house, where a bright light shown from the front steps. A tall figure stood in the doorway, and it took her a moment to be able to tell who it was: Jacob Black, the guy from LaPush that had been Bella's best friend. Apparently, he was still in her life, which was a little weird since Angela had been pretty sure that Jacob had been vying for Bella's affections, and Bella had clearly chosen Edward.
"We should head inside now, Angela," Edward told her quietly. "Come inside, and we'll do our best to answer all your questions."
