Part Two

"They definitely saw us coming," Felix intoned as they approached the Cullen house only to find the entire family on the porch, along with what was likely five of the wolves that they had an alliance with.

"To be expected," Demetri murmured, fully aware of Alice Cullen's power, a power that Aro greatly coveted.  A power that Demetri did not believe his master would ever be in control of.  She wasn't the only Cullen that Aro coveted, either.  He would love to have Edward and his mate Bella, too.  Their daughter as well.  But that was not why they were here.

"Perhaps this was not a good idea, brother," Felix said in a low voice, and Demetri gave a shrug.

"Perhaps not.  But it would likely be worse if they did not know why we were here and found us before we found the girl," he replied, then lifted his voice, raising the volume enough to be easily heard.  They'd been speaking so quietly before that even a vampire would have to be within inches of them to hear their words.  "We come with peaceful intentions."  He nodded toward Alice.  "Surely she is able to tell you of that?"

"You know the holes in my visions," Alice said softly, but not so softly that Demetri and Felix couldn't hear her.  Demetri gave something of a quick bow.

"That was not my intention, though it is true that I was feeling a bit indecisive.  But we do not mean you harm."

"Then why are you here?" Edward asked, and Demetri met the eyes of the younger vampire.

"I am sure you can tell it yourself if you want.  But I will tell you just the same."  His eyes cut to the wolves, and he frowned slightly, considering.  Given their mission this time around, it was possible that the wolves would not be against them.  Not if it was explained.  Edward frowned, looking over at the tallest of the wolves.

"He wants you to stay," he stated, and the man that could turn into a wolf frowned as well, then looked at the others.

"I'll stay.  But I want the rest of you to go."

"Jake," the lone female wolf began, but the other shook his head.

"It's alright, Leah.  Take the others and go.  I'll let you know everything when I can.  If more of their kind come, I want the reservation protected."

"If more of our kind come, it will not be at our direction," Demetri stated, waiting for the four wolves - the girl and three boys, one of whom seemed younger than the others despite his size - to leave before he and Felix approached the front of the house.  "We come with a matter of great importance."

"Don't tell me you came here for help with something.  Why would we ever help you?" the blonde woman spat out, and Carlisle lifted a hand in a gesture asking her to stop.

"Rose..."

"Do you like this world, young one?  Do you like living in it the way it is?  Because if you do, you will hear us out.  And once you hear us out, perhaps you will decide that assisting us is for the best," Demetri stated, and before the blonde could spit anything else at them, Edward spoke.

"We should listen to them.  There's something going on."

"I suggest listening to your mind reader," Demetri put in.

"There's more of us than there are of them.  And they came to us peacefully instead of attacking," Bella said quietly.  "And I really want to know what's going on, so... Maybe this is why you couldn't see everything, Alice.  Jacob's here."

"I've learned to look around him as much as possible," Alice replied, looking over at the wolf, who gave a shrug at her words, not terribly bothered by them.

"Aunt Alice can't really see me, either," the little girl on the steps said.  The half-human, half-vampire daughter of Bella and Edward.  The girl had grown from toddler to small child in the time since they'd seen her, but her eyes were uncanny, appearing to be those of an adult.

"Do you beat her at hide and seek, little one?" Felix asked, smiling slightly as he spoke, which wasn't really shocking.  Felix was the friendlier of the two vampires, and the truth was that Felix had actually rather liked Bella upon their first meeting, though Demetri wasn't really sure why the larger vampire felt that way about the girl.  She'd never seemed all that special to him.

Demetri shrugged as Edward glared at him, then turned his attention back to the little girl as she spoke.

"No.  She just looks for the dark spots in her visions.  She finds me every time."

"Cheater," Felix said, looking over at Alice, the little vampire giving a him a look that was something of a pout.  The big vampire turned his attention back to the others, focusing on Carlisle.  "We need to act quickly with what we've come to do, so if you're willing to hear us out, we need to speak now.  If you are unwilling, we need to be on our way."

"Come inside and speak," Carlisle said, earning surprised looks from some of the others... The blonde girl Rosalie, mostly, though Bella looked unsettled and Esme looked unsure.  Jasper, the scarred warrior from the newborn wars in the southern United States, watched them with assessing eyes.  The wolf glared, clearly untrusting.  Even so, they went along with Carlisle's words, the group heading inside, Demetri and Felix following them, watching as the coven settled themselves.

The wolf stood behind the couch that Edward, his mate, and their daughter sat on.  As the girl was on her mother's lap, Esme joined them there.  Carlisle sat in a chair next to the couch.  Alice and Jasper were seated on a piano bench, Emmett in a cushioned chair with Rosalie seated on the arm of it.  That left a second couch that sat at an angle from the first, and Carlisle gestured for the members of the Volturi to take a seat there, both of them doing so carefully.

"What is it that you are here for?" Carlisle questioned, and Demetri arched a brow as he felt an odd sense of calm flow through him, clearly the work of empath Jasper.  Likely he had decided that if the Volturi were inside him home, he needed to at least ensure that things were kept calm.  Perhaps he should be annoyed by it, but he wasn't here for a fight, so he supposed it didn't matter in the greater scheme of things, especially if it kept the others calm as well.

"You spent decades with us some time ago, Carlisle.  I know you were not there during a Year such as this, but perhaps Lord Aro or Marcus spoke to you about it," Demetri said, keeping his voice low and even as he spoke.  He didn't mentioned the third of the vampire lords because he knew it was unlikely that Caius had spoken to Carlisle of what was going on; Caius was not the sort to share.  Aro did so when he felt it would benefit him, and Marcus... Lord Marcus did not speak often, but he had liked Carlisle very much, so it was possible he had spoken of it with him.

"Spoke to me about what?"

He watched Carlisle carefully as he spoke, quickly discerning that the other vampire had no knowledge of what he spoke about.  "About the Keepers and the Chosen.  About the Year of Portents.  And about the evil that only the lives of the Chosen can help to keep at bay."
