Part One
***Forks, Washington - three days later***
"Should we run?"
The words came from Bella, and Alice shook her head. "No. They... They aren't coming to hurt us. I see enough to know that. But whatever their purpose, they haven't decided how much to tell us, so I don't know why they're coming in the first place."
"And if we did run, you're the only one that Demetri may not be able to find. Although to be fair, we don't know how his powers would work on the wolves or on Nessie," Jasper put in. Bella had long since given up on trying to get the others to stop using the nickname for her and Edward's daughter. She had tried to come up with another nickname or two, but Nessie seemed perfectly happy with the nickname she had, so Bella had given up.
"But he could definitely find the rest of us," Alice said quietly, then looked at the people gathered. Their family, of course... Bella and Edward on the couch with Renesmee on her mother's lap, looking like a five or six year old despite being just fourteen months old. Emmett with Rosalie on his lap in a nearby chair. Jasper sat next to Alice on the piano bench, and Esme and Carlisle were standing next to them. Jacob, a permanent fixture in their lives now, was standing behind the couch that his imprint and her parents were seated on, and he wasn't the only wolf there. After Alice's vision showing two members of the Volturi showing up at the house, Jacob had called in his pack, so Leah, Seth, Embry, and Quil were all there as well. Leah stood next to Jacob while the others - by now comfortable around the family of vampires - were sprawled on the floor. Seth was actually leaning against the chair that Emmett and Rosalie were seated on, unafraid because not even Rosalie could resist the cheerful kindness of Seth Clearwater.
"What do you suggest, Alice?" Carlisle asked, and she gave an unneeded sigh.
"All I see is Demetri and Felix coming here. It's hard for me to tell when, I just know that they show up. It's just the two of them, no one else. The Volturi knows about the wolves, and they know that just two members of the guard wouldn't be able to withstand us if they came here to fight. I don't think... It's not an act of aggression."
"But it could lead to one, couldn't it?" Jacob wanted to know.
"I don't see any choices from them that lead to that. But they're harder for me to see because I don't really know them."
"Could they be coming to check up on us? I know they left peacefully when the guard came to see about Renesmee, I know that they saw Nahuel and he told them that he's lived a hundred and fifty years with no change, but... Could they perhaps want to make sure of it?" Rosalie asked, her gaze flicking briefly to her niece before going back to Alice. "Could they just be checking that she still grows at the accelerated rate that they expect?"
"Am I putting you in danger again?" Nessie asked then in her bell-like voice. The child still preferred to speak to people by giving them images in their minds, but that required physical contact, and there were too many people in the room to communicate effectively with them that way, so instead she spoke, managing to sound very much like the child she looked like at the moment despite the fact that her intellect was far beyond that.
"None of the is your fault, Renesmee. It never was," Edward said fervently, and Leah heaved out a sigh. Everyone braced for her to say something scathing, but what she said was simple and true.
"Look, kid, it's not your fault. It's not like you can help being born, and we all know that the Volturi were just looking for an excuse to come out here anyway. They want power, and this family has it. Even more now than before," the Beta of Jacob's pack said. Her gaze moved to Alice. "Do you think they could be after us? The wolf packs?"
"We can't completely rule it out," Jasper stated, his southern accent evident in his voice. He usually carefully controlled his accent, mostly because Rosalie didn't have one and they were supposed to be twins, but he didn't need to worry about that here, where everyone knew what he was and where he was really from. Jasper's golden eyes flicked back to Leah. "But I doubt that they would be dumb enough to just send two guard members, no matter how skilled, to come after the packs. Not when they saw your numbers. If they sent Alec and Jane, perhaps. With their powers, they could fight a larger number, but Demetri and Felix? We don't even know if Demetri is able to track your kind, and despite his size... If there were enough of you, you could take even Felix down."
Embry cleared his throat, surprising them all. He rarely spoke up when he was around the Cullens, though he'd actually managed to have a friendship of sorts with Emmett, sometimes playing video games with the big vampire, though they didn't really have any deep conversations. "What if... What if they're coming to... study... Renesmee?" he asked tentatively, flinching slightly when that thought elicited a growl from several of the others. Edward, Bella, and Rosalie, plus Jacob as well.
Leah, less worried about upsetting the others, took up that train of thought. "I hate to say it, but... It's a possibility, isn't it? Those leader guys... They're all about the power, aren't they? Or at least the one that did most of the talking is."
"Aro," Carlisle supplied for her, and Leah shrugged, preparing to finish her thought, but Edward beat her to it.
"He was fascinated. Once he realized that she was growing, once he saw Nahuel... I could hear it. He wondered about it... Creating more children like her."
"Which would be murdering more women!" Seth cried out, then flinched at his own words. "Sorry, Edward. I know you didn't know... And I know... But I mean... Bella had to become a vampire to survive, and Nahuel's mother died, and I'm guessing his sisters' mothers all died, too, so... If the Volturi were to try to do that, they'd be killing those women. And unlike you guys... They wouldn't be trying to save the women, you know? You did everything you could to help Bella and changed her because it was the only way to save her. These guys wouldn't do that. Would they?"
"It's unlikely," Carlisle stated. "But they have to know that we wouldn't let them near Renesmee. There's something we're not seeing. Something that we are missing," the patriach of the Cullen coven said, turning to look at his adopted daughter. "Alice, is there anything more that you can see?"
They all turned to look at the tiny vampire, freezing when they found her sitting there in the daze that too often meant that she was in the middle of a vision. Jasper immediately leaned toward his mate, reaching to rest a hand on her arm, concern in his eyes as she came out of it, blinking and sitting up straighter.
"Alice? What is it, darlin'?" he asked, and she shook her head.
"I'm sorry. I should have seen it sooner. I didn't realize..."
"Didn't realize what?" Bella questioned, but it was Edward that answered, having picked the vision out of his sister's head.
"She didn't realize how quickly they were coming. They're already in Forks. They aren't coming; they're here."
