I've been thinking about what vegetables I really enjoy growing, and get a tasty result for the effort I put in.
What's easy may be different at the new house, but this is the list I'm going to try:
Tomatoes
Tomatillos
Peas
Summer squash (one of the kinds I see called patty pan and/or scallop)
Cucumbers
salad mix (loose greens, not heads)
Herbs:
Basil
Sage
Fennel
Chives
Wild garlic
Green onions
Thyme
Oregano
Mint (Which kind should I grow?)
I'm planning on a cottage garden style for the yard, so I will likely use herbs in the flower beds in the front yard as well; these are the ones I expect to grow to use. In a separate berry and perennial bed, I expect to have:
Ground cherries
Raspberries
Strawberries
Gooseberries
The raspberries will probably actually live in a barrel, because otherwise they will be a terror to contain.
I think also have space for three dwarf or semi-dwarf fruit trees. I'm trying to decide what to grow. Possibilities include: apples, pears, plums, peaches, cherries, maybe nectarines.
Since a whole tree of fruit is hard to just eat, I'd like things I can cook or preserve. That argues for at least one being a traditional northern choice like apples. But many of the others appeal, and can probably be preserved. And I can buy local, tasty apples easily, so I wonder if I should grow things I can't buy as easily. Any thoughts?
