Tatham, Bailey & Sanders (cabinet maker)
Creation Date: c.1811
Materials: Giltwood
Giltwood tripod stand with stepped circular top, supported on a central column, carved with foliage, on three legs with griffins heads and wings, terminating in paw feet and with carved foliate bodies, on a concave triangular base
Each pedestal is designed around a support of three griffins with outstretched wings and a palmette leaf on each breast. Their design is inspired by an ancient marble fragment found in Rome and engraved by the architect Charles Heathcote Tatham, whose highly influential 'Etchings … of Ancient Ornamental Architecture of 1799', provided the source for the design. The pedestals are part of a set which numbered nine (of which five survive), supplied for Carlton House in 1811.
