This is another rec from my Gay and Lesbian Lit class. This time it's a novel, not a memoir. A vampire novel. A good vampire novel.
The Gilda Stories How many of my buttons does it push? Let's see:
1. Female lead
2. Minority female lead (African America)
3. Lesbian minority female lead
4. Lot's of interpersonal female relationships without making men the bad guys (she has good guy friends too!)
5. Vampires
6. Vampires with a different take on the basic mythology that makes it interesting (but not dumb, they don't freaking sparkle or anything)
7. Period setting
8. Futuristic setting
9. Sci Fi (in tiny amounts, it starts in 1850 and ends in 2050)
10. It ends up asking a lot of questions about life and family and what we live for, and it doesn't necessarily provide all the answers, which leaves room for quite a bit of discussion, IMO.
