I hate you, UNL

1.  Once again my University is the only school, including other colleges, open today.  Everyone else took a look at the horribly slick roads and whiteout conditions and -25 wind chill and decided their student's safety was more important than classes for one day.  But hey, what's a few potential broken bones?  I mean, it's not like anyone will die ( Read more... )

You have to have car insurance, your house is built to fire codes, kids' pajamas have to have a certain rating of fire resistance, you have to have fire extinguishers in buildings - the government is looking out for you everywhere you go! DAMN THEM.

(I don't understand some people's thought processes. HEALTH CARE IS JUST. HEALTH CARE IS FAIR.)

1. Drive safely!

2. My state's response. They are dancing a jig. http://bit.ly/fqyEDb Actually, all the things linked here depress the hell out of me. http://twitter.com/ajcpolitics

It's insane. I accrued over $2500 in hospital/dr bills in the last two weeks, Thankfully, I have insurance...If I didn't? I can't afford that and this was just a broken arm. Get hurt in a car accident and no insurance? You default, go bankrupt and who eats the cost? Public hospital, which is where uninsured folks end up, and gosh...the gubment picks up that tab.

Personally, I don't want the government forcing me to buy health insurance and interfering with my decisions. If it's there and I make the decision to use it? Fantastic. If not? The government should fuck off. I think it's great they're making health insurance available to people who need it and want it, but I want the freedom of making that decision for myself. I think everyone should have that right.

The problem is...as was pointed out above, they already have many requirements and limitations on other parts of your life. They have those limitations and requirements for the good and safety of not only individuals but the public as a whole (people with cars without insurance risk causing damage to other people or property with no way of repayment, buildings not up to code aren't just dangerous to the people in them but can be dangerous to the surrounding buildings, etc). If someone doesn't have health insurance and they get injured or sick and then can't pay their massive bills, that doesn't just hurt that person. That drives up health care costs for everyone else ( ... )
