Day 11 - A show that disappointed you

My enjoyment of this show started to wane a bit in season 4, got worse in 5, and then ramped up for season 6.  See, individual episodes themselves stopped being interesting to me.  It was the overall story.  There weren't any episodes that I really wanted to rewatch, but the mythology was still sucking me in.  And going in to season 5 I was so sure it was going to pay off.  I mean, sure, I knew not everything would get answered.  I was OK with that.  I mean, I liked the BSG finale, I clearly don't need everything to be wrapped in a neat little thoroughly logical bow.

But the finale, for me, didn't feel clever or groundbreaking, it felt cheap and slapped on.  The on island stuff itself wasn't that bad, though possibly a little anti-climactic, but the sideways world killed it for me.  And don't give me that bullshit that it was all about the characters.  The character resolutions sucked!  So they created this purgatory for themselves, somehow, and somehow didn't know it.  OK, fine, whatever.  Why did Sayid create a world in which the love of his life was married to his brother?  Why did Sun and Jin create a world where they're illegitimate relationship was a secret and Sun got shot in the stomach?  Why was Kate still running?  Why was Jack married to Juliet, a woman he'd never been with in real life and who was not the supposed love of his life?

The events of the finale retroactively made me less tolerant of the frustrations I'd been having for the last couple seasons.  And even the first couple season, while not totally ruined for me, are tainted.  None of it meant anything.

And, yes, I was not happy with the shipping aspect.  I've never made a secret that I don't like Juliet/Sawyer.  I think his relationship with Kate was far too interesting and well developed for me to get invested in him with someone else in such a short span of time, and I think the way they executed the storyline was awful (they turned Juliet into a housewife and then fridged her, joy).  But I can at least understand the appeal.  They were sweet.  No chemistry, IMO, but sweet.  But I cannot stand Jack/Kate.  That relationship was borderline emotionally abusive in the first 4 seasons.  How many of their scenes ended with Kate crying after Jack had shouted at her or otherwise made her feel like crap?  And what about that lovely scene that Jaters love where Kate is in handcuffs on her knees, begging Jack not to trust Ben, and Jack leaves her there in their captivity.  Romantic!  And then after they'd gotten off the island, and Jack went crazy and got into drugs, and then got clean and wasn't as much of a self righteous tool, and Kate stopped hero worshiping him, they never bothered to go back and fix their relationship.  They went from "I don't like the new you" "You didn't like the old me!" to barely sharing scenes and not seeming to give a crap about each other when they were off doing dangerous things seperately, to "OMG I LOVE YOU I'LL BE WITH YOU FOREVER IN ETERNITY AFTER I FIND YOU IN THE PURGATORY YOU MADE FOR YOURSELF WITH ANOTHER WOMAN" with absolutely no effort to make any kind of justification.

I don't buy the 'it was about the characters' bit, because while the finale itself may have been full of forced sentimentality, the rest of the season, and really the last couple of seasons, the characters behaved however the plot required them too.  Their narratives had no cohesion.
