“Tell me once again… About Sho…” Masaki whispered and hugged his knees tighter. He was sitting on the porch with Ohno after the whole day of hard work. Minako was feeding their now four years old daughter and after that she was going to put her in bed. Little Natsuo was still running around the garden, but he was obedient to his father’s orders and stayed within the view.

“You should memorize that already.” Satoshi giggled but seeing his friend’s sad eyes he coughed and nodded. “After that whole situation with Natsumi Sakurai-sama decided to see you… But it was hard because of a few reasons… Ninomiya-sama’s depression, a new family member and some disturbances in the north…”

“Yes, that’s far more important things than…”

“Not for Sakurai-sama. You didn’t see him; I was living in the palace for over a year only because Natsuo was too little to travel. He was breaking. The only sadder and crushed vampire I saw was Natsumi’s father…” Ohno stopped his tale and took a deep breath.

“I’m sorry… I am bringing up sad memories. If you don’t want to talk about it then…”

“No, it’s okay. I have to remember them so I can pass it to my son when he will be older. He should know about his family.” Satoshi sighed and looked at the boy, playing with some stick. “When situation in the castle became more bearable Sakurai-sama decided to find you. It wasn’t that hard to find you, you know?” The former dance teacher giggled and looked at Aiba, who was blushing lightly. “And when he saw you with Minako, he decided to withdraw. Later he said that he saw you that happy only once. Then he decided to go with Victor and because I didn’t have a place to go I went with them.”

“Enough…” Masaki whispered and placed his hand on the chest. This was way too much to handle for him. Of course he loved his family, but that was a totally different way of love. Minako was his friend, but nothing more besides the fact that she was a mother of his child. The taller man’s fingers wandered to the beloved and damned scar on his neck.

“Masaki…”

"Yes, I still love that traitor. Pretty masochistic, ne?" Masaki laughed bitterly and looked at the sky.

"Traitor?" Ohno frowned, not understanding a thing. They never talked about the relationship between Aiba and the vampire.

"He seduced me just to have another source of fresh blood for Natsumi..."

"What are you talking about?! He wouldn't do that, not him! This must be a mistake!" Masaki didn't see his friend that upset. How can he be so sure? Aiba heard with his own ears; on next day after their first lovemaking Sho said he had found a good source of fresh blood after tasting him! The taller man didn’t hesitate to tell about it to his friend, mentioning also the conversation with Matsumoto.

“And you believed that sneaky little monster? You are really naïve, Masaki. He would do everything to separate you from Sakurai-sama at that time. I think he still believed that he will be able to get his love back, but he destroyed every chance for that when he became a vampire.”

“But I heard Sho… Clearly…” Aiba said not as confident as before. Was it true? A part of him wanted to believe in it but the rest was screaming don’t be fooled!

“And what exactly did you hear?” Ohno seemed that he doesn’t want to give up and Masaki had to recall the day he found out that he really meant for the vampire he loved.

Yes, I tasted a really sweet and nutritious blood recently. Those words echoed inside his head since the day he heard them. He couldn’t get rid of them; they were haunting him almost every night.

“Masaki, but that also can mean that they found new source of blood… I don’t know if this will help you, but I know Natsumi drank animal blood in the last few months…” Satoshi frowned, trying to recall the details, but at the same time he didn’t wanted to remember. It was obviously far too painful. The taller man grabbed his friend’s hand and shook his head, showing him that the conversation is over. It was late already and if they want to finish checking the trees in orchard tomorrow, they have to get up early.

“Natsuo! Come back, we have to go to sleep!” Ohno shouted few times before his son finally listened. All three of them went inside the house and head to their bedrooms with their head filled with painful memories.

It seemed the sky didn’t want anyone to go outside. The rain was heavy and a cold wind combed the branches. The weather decided to joke and ruined Masaki’s plans, but as it occurred later only for half of a day. After noon the sun came out and finally Aiba could peacefully check the orchard. Small Yuriko stubbornly demanded to go with him but Minako was adamant and quickly distracted the girl with a promise of making cookies. Natsuo also stayed at home and was supposed to help bringing the wood from the shed. Aiba and Satoshi went to the orchard in silence, each of them lost in his own thoughts. The taller man was trying to place the pieces of the puzzle in his head into the whole picture. Was it true that Jun was lying? It was highly possible, but also this was totally opposite to the thing Sho had said…

“I should stop before I go insane…” Masaki whispered and sighed, focusing on his work. They didn’t have much time because the weather in the morning, so they had to hurry, but also to concentrate not to make any mistakes. The orchard was the main part of their income and it would be a great loss if something would go wrong. Ohno was incredibly concentrated, counting the trees and checking if every one of them was healthy, while Aiba tried with all of his might to push the images of the vampire he used to love away from his mind.

“… and they cut me in small little pieces and couldn’t put it in the right order, so that’s why my nose is crooked.” The former dance teacher looked closely at his friend with a gentle pout.

“W-what are you talking about?!” The taller man frowned and stared back at the older one.

“Something’s wrong? Is it because of our conversation last night? I knew I should stop telling you about it over and over again. It doesn’t bring any good.”

“No, Satoshi. It’s fine… I just… I think I miss him…” Masaki sighed and leaned against the wooden fence. It was the first time he had said it our loud; previously he made sure his feelings will stay somewhere deep inside him. He used all of his will power not to call Sho’s name while having sex with Minako. Yes, he didn’t make love to her. That was reserved for the only person in the entire world.

“It is not fine, Masaki. You have a family now and Sakurai is far away with Victor and I have a feeling he won’t come back here until ages will pass. Listen to me, get over him before you will think of something stupid.”

“Like what?”

“Like leaving Minako and your daughter and try to find him!” Ohno sighed and put his hand on the latter’s shoulder. “I won’t tell you about him, no matter how much you will beg me. I was stupid from me to tell you everything… Just forget…” The older man wasn’t allowed to finish the sentence because screams torn the air and both of them saw somebody running towards them so fast as if he was chased by the devil. After few more seconds they recognized Saitou, a young man that started to work in the household a few months ago. As soon as he reached both men he collapsed on his knees and tried to say something, but he couldn’t catch his breath.

“Saitou-kun, calm down. What happened?”

“Sir, tragedy… Yuriko-chan… She… Tragedy!” The man was clearly in shock and he couldn’t explain what actually had happened, but when Masaki heard ‘tragedy’ and ‘Yuriko’ in one sentence it only could mean something terrible. Maybe she broke her leg? Or got burned in the kitchen? Without wasting his time for wondering he dashed towards the house, but Saitou shook his head and pulled him on the meadow nearby. Aiba saw three other men that were working for him and extremely pale Minako, looking at her dirty hand. The woman’s dress was covered with mud and grass, her hair was in a mess and she mumbled something incoherently. There was no trace of the little girl anywhere.

“Minako? What happened? Where is Yuriko?” Masaki looked at his wife and tried to understand a thing from what she was saying.

“Butterfly… She ran after it…. I… I caught her, I swear, I was holding her so hard I heard bones in her little hand crackle… I… She slipped and… In the well… I… God~!” The woman knelt and started to sob so heavily that she started to suffocate and after a short while, she collapsed.

“Minako?!” Aiba crouched next to his wife and when he saw she is breathing, he exhaled all the air he had in his lungs. “It’s okay, she just fainted…” The man calmed everybody down and his thoughts came back to his little daughter. “Where is Yuriko!?”

“Sir… I’m so sorry… Yuriko is…” Words weren’t sound clearly; it was like he is trapped in a big glass bottle, hearing every third word until the silence filled him when he saw a small body carried by Saitou.

What are you doing with that wooden doll? What is it? Some kind of cruel joke? Where is my child?

“Masaki…” Ohno’s voice invaded his ears and the time started to flow again. The sounds were clear again and the world was colorful. Except one detail… A small body in his worker’s arms. He felt his friend’s hand on his shoulder when Yuriko was handed to him. She was still warm, but Aiba couldn’t feel either her heartbeat or breath. Masaki held her as if she was made from porcelain or any other fragile material and didn’t move an inch, trying to catch everything that was going on.

“Don’t stand like that! Save her! Get a doctor! Anyone?! DON’T STAND LIKE THAT!!!” He was fighting with his tears. Nobody moved nor said a word; everybody were just looking on the ground and either bite their lips or hiding the tears. Satoshi tightened the grip on his friend’s shoulder and shook his head.

“Masaki… She is gone… She broke her neck and, trust me, she didn’t suffer…” The former dance teacher stated calmly and almost coldly that there was no other way just to believe him. Believe…

***

It was so quiet in the house… Nobody’s high, cute voice were filling the rooms, nobody’s small feet’s patter welcomed him… Just the silence… The funeral was supposed to be only for the family members, but the rumor has spread around the village and it seemed that all the habitants came to walk little Yuriko to her grave. Tons of flowers and condolences, faces Masaki didn’t see before, people he didn’t meet… Nothing mattered, nothing at all. Minako didn’t attend the ceremony. She was in shock, barely responding to any attempt of contact. She was just sitting in her daughter’s room, with the muddy dress that she refused to take off. Ohno and Natsuo had moved to the workers’ house just not to irritate Minako with child’s presence. Silence… The hell silence broken only with screams of a mad woman, feeling guilty for killing her own daughter…
