Actor Cory Monteith dead at 31

I came to hate the show and everything associated with it, but this is horrible and tragic.

WTF? Just W.T.F.F.F?

I've never seen Glee nor had I even heard of him before, but it is a sad thing to happen.

Clearly someone who had a bright future...obviously we don't know what happened, but if it is drug-related then it's just sad (as with Amy Winehouse) that with all the things we know now about addiction and depression that these things still happen.

I've never watched Glee, but I've seen his name around. The poor guy. Even if it was accidentally self-inflicted, the poor guy.

ETA: Poor Lea Michelle! One of the reports said that she had yet to respond to reporters or to social media. Jesus, leave the woman alone. I can't imagine how she feels.

So horrible. At least she has some background dealing with extremely intrusive tabloids (and fans!)

To say I'm in shock - still - feels too mild. There are things I do and don't agree with on the show, but his performance was never one of the bad things. This is honestly the biggest shock I've ever had over a celebrity death. Even knowing his issues, I think fans were hoping he'd be a Robert Downey Jr story. Sadly it wasn't. I am absolutely devastated for his friends and family.

So many questions. Was it more of a Heath Ledger or an Amy Winehouse situation? I'm not sure the autopsy will tell the whole tale, but there will be some insight, perhaps.

I think the whole cast (especially the kids) were under tremendous pressure and scrutiny and some had better backgrounds and resources to handle it.

Well, at least we know now.

What do you mean by backgrounds? Cory had been acting for years - he was a regular in another show for four years. Admittedly not a worldwide phenomenon/zeitgeist show like Glee, but there would have been some of that at least.

I'm curious to know what you're thinking about TPTB as well. Or nosy. I may be nosy too. But at least I admit it?

Also, I still can't bear to listen to anything that's been on Glee - no matter if it's the original version, or who sang it, right now.

I'm thinking more of Matthew and Lea with their Broadway background and to some extent Chris, who seems to have a great, supportive family etc. I'm looking very much side-eyed at Ryan Murphy et al right now. PERHAPS putting a guy with a history of substance abuse issues into a situation where he was (maybe unfairly) singled out as being weak link in the singing/dancing dept---wasn't his dancing actually a running joke in-universe---and I know there was a lot of talk that he was being auto-tuned more than the others, wasn't the best idea. I know addicts are addicts and you can't baby-sit someone who's got a self-destructive instinct, but it just seems there was a bad confluence involved here and that somehow this might have been preventable ( ... )

Yeah, I didn't believe it originally, and I think part of me is still waiting to hear that it was all a big mistake, wrong guy. I mean, I hated the show after a while, too, but not because of the people.

It's so unfortunate, especially the number of the cast who were sort of "pulled from nowhere." At least people like Lea Michelle and Matthew Morrison were sort of "hardened Broadway vets." Obviously someone like Chris was just born for the spot-light and has handled it well. But Cory doesn't seem to have had any of emotional resources or a background to get through something like that include the amount of criticism he was getting.

I think we're going to hear a lot of "Glee Babylon" stuff in the next few weeks and it's not going to be pretty.

I've never seen the show, but I don't have to to find this really sad. Only thirty-one, and he was in rehab!

Although rehab may have made him more vulnerable in itself. We may never know what his intent was, anyway.

I'm slightly torn between what I know about addiction and my feeling that this guy was not being served well by the situation and TPTB.

As in the show's OTB PTB? Because yeah :(

By the way, there's something I wanted to get your opinion on. Not fic, but a comment exchange I had, and not anything earthshaking, I wouldn't think. But still. Would you mind exchanging an email or two?
