Actor Cory Monteith dead at 31

I came to hate the show and everything associated with it, but this is horrible and tragic.

WTF? Just W.T.F.F.F?

I'm thinking more of Matthew and Lea with their Broadway background and to some extent Chris, who seems to have a great, supportive family etc. I'm looking very much side-eyed at Ryan Murphy et al right now. PERHAPS putting a guy with a history of substance abuse issues into a situation where he was (maybe unfairly) singled out as being weak link in the singing/dancing dept---wasn't his dancing actually a running joke in-universe---and I know there was a lot of talk that he was being auto-tuned more than the others, wasn't the best idea. I know addicts are addicts and you can't baby-sit someone who's got a self-destructive instinct, but it just seems there was a bad confluence involved here and that somehow this might have been preventable.

On the other hand, addiction is a topic near and dear to my heart, and in the ends, addicts are addicts. There is recovery, but it truly is One Day At A Time, and if Cory was heavily in his disease and had other emotional issues that weren't being addressed or that he felt he couldn't deal with in any other way....

And sometimes an addict is just an addict and addicts like to use.

As you can see, I have feels and I have ambivalence. Something just about this just strikes me as having been preventable...unlike say Amy Winehouse. (Which could be me manifesting loathing for the show and it's creators and is probably not appropriate.)

*nods* I think though, a lot of that was in-universe, not reality, so I'm not sure if it would've affected him in that way. Of course knowing how addiction works (as little as I do), anything could have, but if it hadn't been that, it would've been something else.

I think, given he'd just been to rehab so recently, that may have been a factor.

I know what you mean about thinking it could have been preventable, but I honestly don't think it's your feelings about the show and its creator, because I feel the same and I don't have those same feelings, and while a sample size of two isn't very large, it is at least something to consider. I keep wondering if he'd had someone with him, would it have necessarily been the end, more than anything, knowing he was alone.

Regardless, it's a sad, senseless tragedy, and a loss of a far too young talent, and that just feels wrong.
