Ganked from
speccygeekgrrl List of questions Day 28 - Favorite film from your favorite director
I've been debating a bunch of options for this, trying to determine who my favorite director is with a bunch in the running including Howard Hawks, John Huston, Francis Ford Coppola and the Coen Brothers.
But I decided on
Sidney Pollack and
Tootsie, specifically for Pollack's own performance as Dustin Hoffman's agent, ESPECIALLY the way he says, "Michael, I begged you to get help."
I think film holds up beautifully and I could watch Bill Murray's deadpan saying "Mom?" forever, although looking at that poster gives me a certain amount of gender!fail squick about how desperate they were to make sure that no one would think that wearing the dress meant that the character was anything less than straight. Not just "straight" but "hopelessly straight." (Although it's tempting to read that as though they were really feeling sorry for the poor dear, and his hopeless straightness. Clearly NOT the intention.)
Pollack made some great films in the OLD HOLLYWOOD mode, including The Way We Were and Out of Africa. The man knew a thing or two about romance and spectacle, usally while keeping things witty. Out of Africa would have been my second choice, mostly because of the great snark from Klaus Maria Brandauer.
