The sun was setting in the West; the light was filtered through every tree outside my window. And right in to my eyes.
I opted to solve the problem by deciding I was hungry and walking to Old Chicago. I brought along my writing notebook and waffled on what to write.
I settled for a take on the phrase "dreams of the real" and ended up rewriting Optinomicon chapter 1.
I also caught myself noticing how my writing style has changed as a direct result of reading Gibson's "Pattern Recognition." It's written in present tense and often doesn't use complete sentences, mostly of the Noun Adjective construction. I was writing in first person present tense ("I walk to the cafe and order a coffee, then sit down to wait for my friend.")
I'm not sure if I want to try to rewrite the novel so far in first person present tense, or just use what I wrote today as a sort of Prologue and leave the rest in third person past tense.
This is not the first time my writing has changed based on what I was reading. When I read Douglas Adams' "Long, Dark Teatime of the Soul" some of the phrasing I wrote in Optinomicon has an obvious Adams bent to it.
