FreeVo Update

So far, Gentoo is working out the best of the ... two OSes I've installed ... As a side note, I am really in love with emerge and portage ...

After a bit of trial and error I was finally able to get a stable environment up and running with kernel 2.4.28-gentoo-r9 (compiled from gentoo-sources). Though it turns out I actually needed a few things that aren't in the 2.4 kernel, so I emerged gentoo-dev-sources, compiled, reconfigured LILO and continued installing using this HOWTO guide on gentoo-wiki.com ... one major difference between the guide and my reality is that I'm not planning on using a remote (going to have it hooked up to a monitor / keyboard for initial config, and have sshd and MythWeb installed) emerge mythtv was throwing errors about MySQL needing Qt to be installed, so I told emerge to update the system (KDE 3.something is installed) then went home for the night (the computer is currently at the geek gene office, so I can work on it there between learning python ... or the other way around... work on my python scripts while mythtv (and related stuff) compiles... ;) ).

I also ran into an interesting problem when deciding on a name for the computer. On the jaehop LAN we're using a Cowboy Bebop naming convention, and when thinking of characters to use to name this server, I remembered the guy that ran the VHS / Beta player store ... thing in the episode Speak like a Child (wherein Faye is mailed a video tape from her past, and the boys go on a quest to find a player for it). That character would have been a perfect namesake for the FreeVo box -- if he had a name. After much serarching, I found a script of the episode and he was called "Man" ... so I decided to go with Scratch. They seemed like a fairly media-centric organization... but it was really that or Punch or Judy ...

I'm still open to suggestions though. I think when I get a working MicroATX motherboard in the microATX case, I'll name that one Ein ^_^
