Eric Weiss glanced around the table at the eight other people seated there - Arvin Sloane, Sydney Bristow, Jack Bristow, Michael Vaughn, Marcus Dixon, Marshall Flinkman, Director Chase and Nadia Santos. Each one of them had a serious face that mirrored his own.
“So what are you saying?” Sydney finally spoke, her voice harsh as she turned to Sloane.
“I’m saying that we need to find the other piece of this artifact and we need to destroy the entire object.”
“And if we don’t the world’s going to end?” Sydney asked skeptically.
“That’s exactly what I’m saying could happen,” Sloane replied calmly. “Director Chase agrees with me that this entire agency here needs to be working on this and only this. I’ll even be going out into the field with you.”
“What?” Sydney exclaimed. Weiss noticed that no one else seemed to be speaking at all. Sydney glanced over at him, then at Michael, then at Jack… a look that said someone needed to back her up.
“I’ll be out there as well, overseeing all operations,” Chase soothed.
“Why not just destroy the artifact here?” Dixon asked. “Surely with one part destroyed, it would no longer be a danger.”
“That’s a good question,” Sloane replied. “And the answer is simply this. If we only destroy one part of it, it can be recreated. We must destroy everything, plans and all.”
“If we kept it, it could be of great use to us,” Jack pointed out. “Is there any chance at salvaging it?”
“Absolute power,” Weiss finally spoke up. “If this thing is what you say it is, it’s far too dangerous to keep it around. If it falls into the wrong hands, we’re all screwed.” Jack raised an eyebrow at his terminology. “Hey, might as well be blunt about this,” Weiss added, not caring what Jack Bristow thought.
“I agree with Agent Weiss,” Nadia said, offering him a smile. “Rambaldi created great things, but they’re beyond our power to understand and use without great sacrifices and even then, you must ask the question - should we?” Her face hardened for a moment and she met her father’s eyes. He had lost it, using her and pumping her full of chemicals to try to gain Rambaldi’s secret. Weiss thought he saw a glimmer of regret in Sloane’s eyes. Of course, Sloane only showed them what he wanted them to see of him. So maybe it was planned. Mentally, Weiss shrugged.
There was a long silence in the meeting. “So who’s on point this time?” Vaughn finally asked.
“Sydney, you’ll be carrying the other piece of the artifact. Your job is to get it past security. The complex you’ll be infiltrating is housed inside a mountain. There is no good way to approach it, so we’ll need a diversion. Remember that everywhere in this complex, you will be watched. Marshall has created a device for when you need to elude security.”
“Sydney, you don’t have to do this if you don’t want to,” Jack spoke. “Someone else can do this.”
“No dad, this is my job. I’ll do it.” Her voice was confident. To her, to all of them, this was simply another mission that needed to be completed. Simply another task in a line of great accomplishments. And that was how they had to view it… as their job. Otherwise, the task would seem far too great.
Director Chase spoke. “This is an extremely dangerous mission. I’m not requiring any of you to participate.”
“And you all know where I stand on this,” Sloane added.
“I will participate of course,” Jack said stiffly.
“And I’m definitely in,” Dixon spoke.
“Me too,” Vaughn nodded.
“Me three,” Weiss said with a grin.
Nadia looked at him and smiled. “And then I guess that would make me four?” she added.
Marshall grinned nervously. “Well you know I’m… I wanna help on this… big uh… project… mission… thing. So I guess… I mean, I’m in too.”
“Excellent,” Sloane replied. “Now go get some rest tonight. You’re not going to get much sleep for the next few days. We’ll reconvene in the morning. The flight leaves at noon.”
“What’s the name of the operation?” Dixon asked curiously.
“Operation Mordor,” Sloane replied.
“That so inspires confidence,” Weiss quipped, then whispered to Vaughn. “Funny, I always thought Sloane would be Saruman.”
