This morning my boss made the official announcement to everybody, of my new role and my replacement and the other people moving around. I went upstairs to scope out where my new workgroup and new office are -- I like the new space.
I quit work 90 minutes early and went to B's condo -- I hadn't seen him one-on-one in about a month. We celebrated my birthday, finally, with a bottle of wine and a delivery meal, followed by snuggling and TV. I didn't want to intoxicate too much, because I'm still hoping to run in the morning.
But, I also think I've been having a minor gout flare over the past two (or more) days, so I've put myself back on the gout medicine, and I'll email my doctor over the weekend. This morning that gout-specific spot on my knee was alarmingly painful to the touch, and for most of the day I felt like I was limping. But it wasn't as bad as the major flares of the past year. But, it was too similar to them to ignore, and was making me think I couldn't run tomorrow.
But, what's causing it? Was it just a normal reaction to running 4 miles and then lifting weights the next morning? But why so painful in that one spot -- and now it's not painful there at all? That's more like gout than like an overuse reaction -- the gout stuff can arise and dissipate really quickly.
My doctor was so eager to take me off the gout medicine after changing my high blood pressure medicine, but I think I may have other gout triggers. I'd spent time in the hot tub the past couple evenings with mild alcohol consumption, and one of my major flares had occurred on a weekend when I'd spent a lot of time in the hot tub with major alcohol consumption, so dehydration from tub & alcohol seems to be part of it. I could end my hot tub time, and give up alcohol, but ... I could also just stay on the gout medicine.
I don't want to fight with my doctor ... she wanted me to stop taking the medicine unless the gout returned. I think the gout has returned, just not as godawful painfully as it had before, because I have moderated multiple triggers. Also, I think there's another gout spot or two in my feet, that have also been recurring.
This gout stuff has definitely cut into my ability to exercise over the past several months and is part of why I haven't found momentum with increasing my running mileage.
Well, I have months of supply of the Allpurinol, and I think I have enough evidence now that the gout was returning without it. I'll email my doc over the weekend and see what she says. Meanwhile, I'll keep taking the medicine.
And hopefully I'll be up for a run in the morning.
