B's condo is part of an unusual development here in Montgomery County. It was a private girls' school from 1894 to 1942, then it was acquired by the US military as a hospital. But during the 1970s it was vacated by the military, although it had been offically named as a Historic Place.
Some 30 years later, a developer acquired the vacant and vandalized facility, and turned it into condos. It consists of a couple dozen achitecturally-diverse buildings, and is visually striking.
I tell you all of this in part to explain what happened. B's condo is on the ground floor of a multi-floor building that looks sort of like an old German castle, like if you were to visit Busch Gardens in Williamsburg and hang out in the Rhinefeld section.
Immediately above B's condo is a ballroom that can be used by residents for parties or whatever. This ballroom is as large as five condos on the ground floor below.
So -- somehow -- a fire broke out in this ballroom, which caused the sprinkler system to deploy, and by the time the fire department was finished putting out the fire and turning off the sprinkler system -->
ALL FIVE CONDOS BELOW WERE COMPLETELY DESTROYED BY WATER DAMAGE.
So five families are now homeless for a number of months while their condos are rebuilt.
Fuck.
