I had this thought a couple of times before too that the hard stuff among conspiracy theories and religion have quite much in common.

Both are a way of interpreting events from the real world and put them into a bigger context, but do this in a way which is totally unrealistic and could never be true.
But those who firmly believe in it - they obey and voice their loyalty. Fight for and defend it with all their might. And that although they have no firm proofs that even non-believers can't ignore - although all what they see as "proof" for their theories/religion are just gizmos which only they claim to have a firm explantion for. (For example: The UFO conspiracy theorists which talk about "proofs" or "aliens having already visted the earth" and "having manipulated human history", it's only them which come up with supposed "artifacts" which shall lay down proof of their belief. - No achaeologist has ever found "artifacts" or "fossils" like this. And humans dig on the earth to get know more about its past and past cultures and people forquite a while already.
In a hundred years, if those "artifacts" and "fossils" were real, someone else should have dug them out before too and a couple of these should lie around in Western museums... But, none of that. Nothing.)
