Reading some old LJ entries from before the pandemic, my life seemed a lot more stressful with commuting every day, also having Dax, especially the period right before the pandemic when B's husband had moved back in so I was pretty much stuck with T at the house ALL the time. How I found time to exercise at all was a miracle. How did I run

Simple answer to that - and it has fewer to do with wanting more stuff than something else: Slave drivers don't want you to have free time. They want you to work until you drop... No matter how much you improved your productivity. "Increase my wealth!".
It's as simple as that.

That's why I am much happier working for either a nonprofit or the government, it takes the "increase my wealth" factor out of the employment equation. But there's still a drive to become more productive, to handle more cases or whatever, more out of institutional pride than about wealth accumulation. Like, if our jobs are worth doing, they're worth doing ever more of.

Hm... If government workers are able to to handle more, usually their numbers are being cut down throughout the years.
Because "we are able to handle the demand with fewer workers, so we also do handle the demand with fewer workers" - and as government funding is always a politicized issue in the parliaments...
