Exchanging Twitter for Instagram??

An old friend of mine announced today on Twitter that if he leaves Musk's social media service, his online peeps could find him on Instagram.  Which is owned by Facebook.  I fail to see the moral superiority of Facebook over Twitter.  People who didn't leave Twitter during all those years before it banned Trump, now suddenly want to express their supposed moral superiority over Musk by switching to some other awful social media service.

What would a non-profit social media service look like?  Will we ever find out, or will all the non-profits keep using Twitter and Facebook to drive engagement and fundraise.

A friend of mine who is seeing a therapist texted me, "My therapist suggests I should start volunteering."

I agreed, yes, you should start volunteering.  It would take you out of your head and focus your actions on actually making a difference in the world.

"But I hate people."

That's because you're stuck inside your own head.  Volunteer to help animals, then.

I said that modest amounts of volunteering usually improve both mood and mood stability.

We'll see whether this friend actually starts volunteering.

I've long felt my job is a sort of volunteering, because I work in the public interest rather than to pile up profits, and because I could definitely make more cash by working for the private sector.  I think I'm generally a happier and less stressed person because I work in the public interest instead of at a private law firm.  I still have my stressful periods, but I'm not regularly working 60-hour weeks.

I've advised my friend to look for a government or non-profit job, but the pay cut is too much of a deterrent.  This friend makes a chunk more than I do, despite being much younger, and already aspires to the lifestyle of the 1%.  But isn't happy.

I think the best career decision I ever made was to take a pay cut to switch from for-profit to non-profit work.  Even so, my household income is still in the top 3%.
