So I finally broke down and watched Into Darkness and I have to say: I didn't hate it. Sacrilege, I know.
I'll base my amusement on the fact that a) Star Trek has done a gazillion times worse 2) I came into this with bottomed-out expectations 3) I am perfectly fine with plot-holes if the characters are wonderful enough. With the exception of our new-verse Spock suddenly deciding to beat the tar out of Benny, I was happy with the characterizations. More or less.
But the real reason I bore you with this is a hopeful prediction. This is the beginning of the series, yeah? So maybe we could go back to one of the very first episodes of the series with "Where No Man Has Gone Before."
If you've never seen the episode, it starts with one of the Enterprise crew members (a man named Gary Mitchell who happens to be besties with Kirk) gets hit by some weird wave or some-such and suddenly gains god-like powers. After an epic fight with foam rocks and psychic punches and the like, Kirk manages to kill his power-maddened friend and save the enterprise.
Why does this matter? Because Mitchell isn't the only one who gets powers.
The lady on the right goes by the name of Dr. Elizabeth Dehner PhD MD. Does she not bear a remarkable resemblance to someone in the most recent movie?
And wouldn't a super-powered demi-god (or two) be fun to do with today's effects? The epic showdown with Kirk at the end could be exceedingly fun, and could even take advantage of the fact that our Captain is now apparently a super-dude. I mean, Kirk made a big deal of welcoming the Admiral's daughter (her name was Carol? I think?) to the crew. Someone's working awful hard to push her into the crew, despite her lack of original cannon.
Just a thought.
