Name: Bruno
Age: 32
Hometown/Region: Saffron City / Kanto
Class: Elite Trainer
Team:
Hitmonchan (Serious)
Hitmonlee (Adamant) - these two often bicker with one another, but they have a friendly rivalry going.
Steelix (Hardy)
Riolu (Gentle) - given to him as an egg. Bruno treats it carefully, unsure as how to raise it, and is reluctant to show it to others.
Machamp (Adamant) - Bruno’s first partner and close friend. He will often travel with it outside of its Pokéball.

Box: Onix (x3), Tyrogue (Quirky)

History: haha this somehow became really long I don’t even
Bruno was born to a middle-class family in Saffron City, the second of three children. His father was an accountant for Silph, while his mother cooked and cleaned up after her children - an older sister who eventually moved to Celadon to work in the Department Store to fund her education, hoping to follow in her father’s footsteps; a younger brother, the darling of the family, who secured a scholarship to a prestigious private school where he studied Pokémon evolution with the hopes of becoming an aide to Professor Oak.

From a young age it was clear that Bruno was exceptionally strong and physically able. When he was ten he was personally invited to train under Karate Master Kiyo. His handicap in terms of size and strength was balanced by his dedication, and all-out strategy. As a gift that reflected his spirit, Bruno was given his first Pokémon - a Machop, who quickly became his training partner. It was in a cross-dojo event that Bruno met a young kid named Brawly, who he would maintain strained contact with over the years.

However, while a hard worker, Bruno wasn’t exactly as academically inclined as his siblings - it seemed that, no matter how hard he tried, he was never going to be as strong as they were. Frustrated with himself, he found himself caught up in street brawls and was often in trouble with the law. At the age of sixteen he dropped out of school and, when given an ultimatum to get a job or move out, found work at a nearby construction site.

While his family expected that he would quickly tire of hard labour and realize the value of an education, Bruno thrived in his new environment. Though he wasn’t (and still isn’t) the most socially comfortable, he made close friends with the other workers (who gave him the nickname ‘Shrub’, which would stick with him for a long time) and loved the daily challenge of pushing his physical limits. Machop was soon joined by two Tyrogue, an endlessly bickering duo who often competed to see who would be the most helpful on the site…often with a disastrous ending.

Life was good, if monotonous, for Bruno - until, in his eighteenth year, a sixteen-year-old upstart named Sabrina flattened Kiyo in a Pokémon battle, stripping the Saffron Fighting Gym of its official League title. Bruno, who had always idolized Kiyo and believed that hard physical training could overcome anything, was crushed and confused. His sense of the world turned upside-down, he packed his belongings and set out towards Lavender Town to clear his head.

In Lavender, Bruno had his first encounter with a ghost. For someone who had always believed strictly in what he could see right in front of him, the experience was eye-opening, and the complete inability of any of his Pokémon to harm the ghosts taught him that there was more to the world than just physical strength. It was also in Lavender that Bruno would have his first run-in with Agatha, a woman who would stick out in his memory until he was re-united with her as a member of the Elite Four, five years later.

Still feeling unfulfilled and strangely empty, Bruno turned north toward the Rock Tunnel. He was quickly lost within its depths - neither his Machoke, nor his newly evolved Hitmonlee could help him. However, after his third day when food and water was running low, his Hitmonchan learned Fire Punch as it took down an Onix. With a new partner and a source of light, Bruno was able to emerge on the Cerulean side.

The quest seemingly having fallen into his lap, Bruno began to conquer the Kanto gyms. Some were easier than others, but he enjoyed the change of pace. Over the course of his journey he ran into his older sister in Celadon, burying the hatchet between the two of them, and evolved his Machoke into a Machamp.

Eventually, at the age of twenty, he ended up right where he had began - in Saffron City. If his trip around Kanto had taught him anything it was that there was room for being cool and using one’s head. Still, the fight against the trainers (and, eventually, Sabrina) was not easy, ending in several spectacular losses for himself. He persevered and came out with a Marsh Badge, the integrity of the Saffron Fighting Dojo somewhat restored. It was that victory that convinced Bruno that, through hard work and dedication, every limitation can he surpassed.

Bruno had gained a wanderlust that could not be tamed in Saffron, so he headed out once again, this time with his parents’ blessings. He visited the Sevii Islands where he discovered the Ember Spa and gained a liking for Rage Candybars, and took a trip to Sinnoh where a man with dark eyes gave him a Riolu egg.

A powerful battler with a nothing-held-back battle style, Bruno gained fame as a trainer who trained himself as seriously as he did his Pokémon. Wanting to battle the best trainers in the land, he petitioned for a spot in the Elite Four and was eventually granted it; he would remain with the Elite Four through four champions (including Green, Red and Lance) and the death of Agatha, who he had become somewhat close to despite their extreme differences in terms of personality and battle strategy.

In a way that he would not be able to explain for years, the battles with the youths from Pallet Town changed Bruno. After fighting Red and Green he became more focused on how he interacted with his own Pokémon in battle, and their relationships.

Over the nine years since Red and Green came through and the six years since he fought Ethan, Bruno has committed himself to training himself and his Pokémon. He takes occasional breaks to travel to the Sevii Islands, visiting Lorelei and the Ember Spa to heal from his constant training-related injuries, and to stock up on Rage Candybars. He still enjoys walking down the open road, challenging every trainer that crosses his path - and whenever he’s near Lavender, he makes sure to visit Agatha’s grave.

Personality:
Aware of his shortcomings, Bruno can be seen as confident and self-assured, or inflexible and obstinate, depending on your point of view. He takes every challenge seriously and always insists on pushing himself and his Pokémon to the physical limit, believing that the best defense is a good offense.

He is the tiniest bit insecure, but hides it well - he’s the kind of person that will cover up his uncertainty by yelling louder. He’s a little awkward in social situations (see: covers his uncertainty by yelling louder) but will tolerate the company of others…he just needs some alone time to compensate for it. He does poorly around refined society, feeling uncomfortable in anything that covers his chest more than a vest or loose jacket. Surprisingly, considering his dark features and built body, he’s good with children - he’s rather gentle with them. For him, there’s a small pleasure in running into a young, inexperienced trainer away from home for the first time, and spending time with them to soak up their optimism about the world and the future.

More than anything, Bruno wants young trainers to see that, by pushing their own physical abilities, trainers and Pokémon can become stronger together. Sometimes smiling, usually frowning, but always serious about everything he does - that’s Bruno.

Sample I:
Hey, Red.

Red.

Red, can you hear me?

HEY, RED.

You know, I’m still impressed that a scrawny kid like you was able to beat me. I don’t take that lightly! I’ve been training myself and my Pokémon twice as hard ever since then. Come back for a rematch, you’ll see what a difference we’ve made.

Listen - I’ve experienced myself the power of you and your Pokémon. You ever considered taking me up on my deal? You can train your Pokémon all day, but I can show you how to train yourself. It’ll do you good…

I - DON'T LET YOURSELF GET SOFT. Remember: the difference between victory and loss is in how hard you push yourself.

If you’re ready to work hard and take your battling to the next level, meet me on One Island…and bring some Rage Candybars.

Sample II:
The air smelled sweet and clean when Bruno emerged from the Dark Cave, his search for Kiyo so far fruitless. His master had gone into solitary training somewhere in Johto, and the dojo was falling into disrepair without him - but the man was as elusive as he was powerful, and Bruno hadn’t seen a hair of him as he combed through mist-covered grasslands and the coldest depths of caves.

Distracted and unsettled in a way that he could not quite explain, he turned to Machamp, who had come out of the cave behind him, and motioned with his chin to the south. Though the sun had already risen and neither had gotten a wink of sleep all night, they were ready -

“Hey! Mister!”

- To push on.

“Yeah, you! Mister long-pants-no-shirt! Wanna battle?”

Squinting his eyes in the bright sunlight, Bruno caught the silhouette of a young child running towards him, hand with Pokeball fully extended. Once the boy caught up with him, he doubled over, panting, while Bruno barely suppressed a grin.

“Like -” the boy panted, “-Like I said, wanna battle? My Rattata’s a super Rattata! He’s in the top ten percent of all Rattata!”

No longer able to stop a smile from spreading out across his face, Bruno motioned for Machamp to step forward. One pummeled Rattata later, Bruno was carrying the boy on his shoulders towards Violet City.

It's these little things that make life interesting.
