I'm going to Kansas City this weekend and have booked a hotel near Central Avenue..I heard after that this is a bad part of town. it's near Quindaro, I guess? I heard that was bad, too? I've never been there..is this just talk, or should I find a different place to stay.

kck, travel

uh.. it's not exactly the greatest aera. you could probably do better, and depending on what you're doing, closer to somewhere to do things.

I was going to the Aid For Women center to talk about my choices for an unplanned pregnancy. I chose that place because it was the cheapest and closest. Now, I'm reconsidering that I found out where it was and how the surroundings were..

Not a good part of town. It ranks up there with driving Prospect late at night. Gangs, crime, drugs, etc.

The Quindero Area is one of the 2-3 neighborhoods in the Kansas City area with the worst reputation.

As far as that just being 'talk', I'm from NJ, and there is not really any part of Kansas City that I have found which scares me. My mother in law owns a house off Central, and my step-daughter has lived up there. It is not ideal for a young single lady, but that also depends a lot on your other risk factors. Do you go to the library at lunch? Or to you go carousing for parties at 1AM? There is more petty (and not so petty) crime in Quindero, but it is easy to avoid if you're making good choices.

Your being from NJ has what bearing on this?

Explaining that he might be biased toward what constitutes "scary part of town" ? Just a thought...

I hear about "ghettos", "slums", "gangs", "mafia".... all this oh-so-horrible stuff about certain -bad- parts of town. There are some areas of blight, sure... but even the bad parts of Kansas City are not really all that bad. Even NJ isn't as bad as some might think, but it DOES have sections that I prefer not to hang out in. KC does not have that. Not Quindero, Argentine, Armordale, West Bottoms, Paseo, Troost, etc.

Now I didn't like wearing a private guard uniform up in parts of the Paseo at night, that does tend to increase risk of getting messed with. But it was an aggrevation more than anything else.

I'm a pretty brave person. I lived at Prospect and Troost (bad area) for years.

I wouldn't stay in the hotel you're talking about unless I absolutely had to.
