Fandom Malarky

Okay, so...Legend of Korra. Honestly I'm not surprised that it's not as good as Avatar: The Last Airbender, but I had higher hopes for it then what we've seen. Also I need to stay away from the fandoms for both of these shows, but it draws me like a moth to the flame. -sigh-

Now don't get me wrong. I don't hate the show really. It's just a bit lack luster in comparison with the previous show. To be fair ATLA was much longer thus had more time with it's story and character development. And I think LOK's biggest problem is that it has too much in it. It's stuffed to the brim with ideas that could work if a few of them were focused on, but there's just so much and they need to touch on it in each episode.

However I think the thing that needs to go is roma- Mako is dead weight to the show. Which is sad to me because I was prepared to like him and he was named in tribute of an amazing voice actor who played a wonderful character in the prior show. But honestly you can cut him from the equation and you probably wind up with a much better romantic/friendship subplot.

Let me paint you a picture of how a less confused love triangle could go in this series: Bolin starts off as a flirt, but he's not a huge dick who leads people on. He's also rather naive about the world and how it works. So he likes Korra who joins his team (fire bender guy just kinda flits about and is inconsequential), but then he runs into (literally) Asami who's a big fan and hey he's been known to date his fans. She's also a kind beauty and they hit off pretty well. Meanwhile Korra, who hasn't had much interaction with people her own age much less boys, has been developing her own crush on him and is a bit jealous that he's dating this rich girl who's going to help sponser the team! Now, Asami doesn't have to be painted as a prissy bitch, but Korra is a bit resentful.

THEN Bolin and Asami were going to go out after a match before the final, but Bolin feels bad for excluding Korra and they turn it into a team kinda night. Asami starts feeling like a third wheel while Korra and Bolin have some excellent chemistry, but she doesn't feel like Bolin would cheat on her. Still she goes and the scene with Tahno plays out as is. Afterwords Bolin and Korra have a moment and there is ROMANTIC TENSION AND ACTUAL DRAMA THAT I'D CARE ABOUT.

Unlike what happened with the show with Mako.

Without him there's a clear triangle and it'd involve characters who don't spend their time being self absorbed and a jerk. Honestly I feel like he's using Asami and staying with her more out of obligation than genuine affection, has control issues, and is incapable of being even remotely kind to anyone who isn't his brother or his sugar money. Also, I'd like to say that maybe Hasook, their old waterbender teammate, might possibly not have been a jerk as much as he just couldn't put up with Mako and his bullshit anymore. It's possible that he could've been a jerk, but I feel more that Mako actively pushed him away.

Also without him that's one less character taking up time on the show that could be given to better characters.

I'm actually kinda dreading the next episode. I really hope that if there's any pestering from Jinora and Ikki about Korra dating Mako that it's downplayed or at least isn't focused on in great detail.

But that's just me.
