There's a very big assumption in fandom that it's the duty of the female person in any het pairing to be perky, cheerful, light-hearted one in the relationship and to brighten up the life of her presumably much more serious male partner. If the most prominent female character in a popular fictional narrative is angsty, moody, gloomy, angry, depressed, highly cautious, overly serious, frequently nervous, prone to anxiety and worry, unusually susceptible to guilt, or weighted down with more responsibility than should be put on someone her age, a large faction of the fandom will insist that she be paired with a male character fits the same description and that her own issues should be erased so that she can be sunny and cheerful for him/make him smile. Well, X and Y are shoved into their boxes and if there are ever X's or Y's that don't fit into the box perfectly are weird or something.
It's particularly eyebrow raising in the case of LOK because people are praising Korra for being a woman of color and a lead character yet people are already shipping her with Mako assuming him to be Zuko 2.0. I hope he'd drastically different from Zuko in over all personality. (He's already different in that he's actually good at fire bending.) It's even weirder to me with compairing Morra/Koko to Zutara because Korra =/= Katara. At all.
And it might just be the Earth Kingdom Stan in me, but I really like Bolin already. He's so expressive with his bushy brows.

But- but all Water Tribe girls are alike! Think about how Katara is doomed to turn out JUST LIKE HAMA if she shows even the slightest hint of not-niceness!
Seriously, though, even Katara-as-she-is-in-canon =/= Katara-as-many-Zutarans-imagine-her. It does not surprise me that some people are having trouble with this.
You know what? I have thought about this line from your post some more: Mako should be Korra's Sassy Gay Friend. He's got the Sassy Scarf for crying out loud! And now I am thinking hard about character designing and that scarf, and my eyebrow keeps rising higher and higher. I think there might be howls of disappointment in the fandom's future.
