The device had deactivated after that, and though Light had the oppurtunity for a few diverting conversations - a relief considering he was yet to understand what 'be prepared' meant and it sounded strangely ominous - his priority had become something else entirely; namely, concealing the Death Note in a strange place, in a way that he could find it but nobody else could, and as fast as possible. He could not be certain how long it would take L to reach him - he could have anything from a few minutes to hours. What he did know was that if he was caught with it in his possession, he would be forced to give it up.
First, he stopped long enough to tear free the central twenty pages - ten sheets in either direction of the double page in the center, effectively creating two notebooks - though clearly only one which would regenerate. This was a precaution. If one side was taken and used or destroyed, the other would still be available. If L found out - possibly through these dreams he'd been told about - that he had the notebook with him, he could recover that and give it to him, but still leave himself armed.
Which came to the rules. Though they were important in regard to his freedom, they also permitted anyone to use the notebook at whim. They were torn out and destroyed, rendering it impossible for anyone who did not know what the notebook could achieve to freely use it. With them went any hope of convincing L that he was innocent if he found the notebook, but if it reached that point, the fact that he had concealed it at all would be condemning enough.
Finally, Light concealed both within a house that he had claimed specifically for the purpose. The hiding spaces seemed natural; strangely easy to decide on if not easy to find. One went underneath a vast, heavy flagstone in front of the fire -- he managed to break a nail lifting it. The second went in the pantry, dropped into dead space between two supporting walls. The bricks would need to be hacked out for Light to recover these eighteen pages, but they would for the same reason be safe.
Which left one final sheet to replace the piece in his watch with Higuchi's name on it - which he swallowed - and the piece in his wallet, which he had thought it too risky to use recently and yet which, considering the current circumstances, might turn out to be essential; hidden behind a specially prepared flap.
And then quickly - and having scratched a crescent moon shape onto the door with a jagged stone - Light returned to the meeting place, relieved when he arrived to discover that L was yet to. He had time to catch his breath, his hands still trembling from the rush of adrenaline.
