The journey to Amegakure should take just under half an hour. It has in the past.
This time, Naruto makes it in less than twenty minutes.
Then he spends an agonising five at the edge of the village, his Hitomi in his hands as he turns it over and over like the words in his mind and the concept of what he is about to do.
The part that says ‘Nagato deserves to know’ vies with the part that says ‘he would be better off not knowing.’ And through all of it, Naruto doesn’t have a damn clue how he will get the words out.
He could say he tried once but he did not, the fact was just thrown out there, too easy to miss. This move is a conscious decision and a tangible effort.
He is going to tell a man he has no future, in the world he came from. He is going to tell him that he is dead, that the woman he loves exists alone, that Naruto’s village had a hand in it all.
He is almost certain that Nagato does not know that he is dead. He is almost certain that he missed the dream thus far.
He doesn’t know how to begin, but his feet know the way to Nagato’s home all the same and they carry Naruto there with almost no conscious effort on his part. Nagato said something about diplomacy but Naruto thinks the other man should know him well enough by now to recognise that Naruto does not do ‘diplomatic.’
Naruto barely even does propriety, which is why he just slides open the door to Nagato’s home and sticks his head inside, glances around and offers a quiet.
“Hello?”
