[Four has always been the less independent twin of the two of them, and it shows by his general dislike for leaving the house on his own. He knows that he can’t stay inside all the time however, since he’s sure that he’s come pretty close to examining most of the household during his short time here. So he must prepare himself to venture outside ( Read more... )

[ Well, it seems that Kakashi's finally somehow managed, one way or another, to get back into his own body... ]

I think to be brave means to do everything within one's power to overcome that which you fear. You can become brave a number of ways -- but what is most important is to have a reason for wanting to be brave.

So if you're too afraid to overcome your fears that makes you a coward? What if you don't have a reason to overcome your fears?

[Fretfretfret.]

Bravery is finding the strength to overcome your fears. Everyone has within them the ability to be brave. Sometimes all it takes is finding a reason. That reason can be as simple as wanting to be brave, or for a special person who is precious to you.

[...Four feels even less brave now that he realizes that he has less of a reason to be than others. He doesn't have a precious person to protect, and even if he did, what can he do? He's so tiny that everything he does is completely ineffective.]

What if you're too small to be brave?

Size has nothing to do with bravery. Even the smallest creatures can be extremely brave. I've seen puppies not much bigger than you demonstrate remarkable bravery, because they had a reason to be strong, to try their best to overcome their fears, against all odds.

I will keep that in mind.

Thank you for your help.

[He hesitates for a moment.]

Have you ever been scared?

Actually, I'm scared all the time. It's a part of life, being afraid. Overcoming fear... is what makes one courageous. It is my duty, as a shinobi, to overcome fear, every time it might present itself.

There is a saying that may be useful to you, that I heard somewhere. It goes like this: "The only thing to fear is fear itself."

[The only thing to fear is fear itself?

Four has read that somewhere before! How interesting.]

It's terrible though, to be afraid all the time.

Is being a Shinobi worth that?

Wait.

What is a Shinobi?

Shinobi... I suppose you would call us soldiers of a sort. Are you familiar with the word "ninja"?

Fear is a part of life. It is a part of what it means to be human. It is both our greatest weakness and also our greatest strength, in some ways. For some, fear can be a great motivator -- especially as there are many different types of fears. Fear of failure, fear of loss.... these are common for those who call themselves shinobi.
