“Hey. Hey mister.”raging_kitsuneSeptember 5 2011, 02:44:45 UTC
It feels almost strange to be looking up at this person, but he's only five and he's not very big for his age.
"Do you have any food?" he asks, not shy at all about having to ask a complete stranger. He just knows he's hungry and there's an adult on his roof. He glances back at the box he calls home and then rubs his nose as he turns to look up at the man again. The box is leaning, mostly soaked through like his clothes. But it doesn't seem to matter. "I'll trade you this necklace for something to eat." He hesitantly holds out a blue crystal with a few beads on either side. The necklace is important to him, precious, but so is the ache in his tummy.

[Jason jerks around when he hears that voice, frowning slightly, when he sees the kid there. His stomach twists, cause dammit, because that sight strikes far too close to home.]
[Though, to be fair, Jason spent more of his time stealing money than begging for it, but the situation is still there, the sentiment. Being hungry, cold and mostly alone.]
Keep the necklace, kid. [He reaches into his pocket, grabbing his wallet, and pulls out several bills, handing them over.]
[A street rat. Of course he was. An orphan, an outcast. How was it he was always drawn to these people. Somehow he was like them, despite his rank, despite his noble blood, aristocratic upbringing... It was people like this, loud and rough and unrefined that he seemed to migrate towards. People that held their friends as family since they had none of their own. Honest hardworking people. People like Renji and Shuuhei and Momo.
And now here he was somehow trying to befriend this man, to help him from becoming any more lost regardless of the likelihood of failure. He didn't know what to say, how to help, how to make anything better for him... but that hardly meant he wasn't going to try.]
Would it have helped? If someone had told you then... not to trust him... [He shakes his head a bit, his own expression darkening for a moment. He knew very well how impossible this question was. Even with a warning... how could you truly believe someone you have trusted for most of your life could possibly betray you.] Do you think it ever would've

[It's that man who tried to help him. That..shinigami. And his words are too true, and they cut deep and Jason just feels so tired, even though he's just slept.]
No. No it wouldn't have. [Because he knows himself, because he knows how stubborn he is, how Bruce was literally his entire world. The man had lifted him from the streets, had showed him how to fight, to defend, to do more than just survive. He had given him purpose beyond survival, and that...that could never be overstated, how important that was.]
He loved him too much, trusted him too much. Nothing I could have said or done would have changed it.
[He literally would have done anything for Bruce. But slowly that was taken away, his loyalty cheapened. Replaced, ignored, and finally-]
[I did you a disservice and never should have made you Robin.]
[Jason inhales sharply, and his eyes squeeze tightly shut for a moment, as his breath slowly trickles out again.]

It is a dangerous thing... to invest so much of oneself into another person...
[He closes his eyes slowly, shaking his head slightly as he tries to dismiss the thought of what he'd have thought if someone had tried to warn him of Gin's part in Aizen's treachery when he was still in academy.]
But when we are young we are foolish and unwilling to see the truth in the wisdom of others.
[He has to wonder though... even in dreams if Jason's determination to attempt to help his younger self had any implication that he thought there was still something in him to save. That would be a start, a step beyond the distraught man he'd seen before, so eager to inflict such pain upon himself for the sake of reassurance.]

You don't have food?
[Because he can't eat money and he can't leave his box. Someone might take it.]
