Aw shit I hate to be THAT GUY and write essays about dumb nerd shit, but I started trying to write what bothered me about the Watchmen movie and it ended up being kind of long. SORRY
I loved the movie, but all of your points are really valid criticisms. Especially about the overuse of violence. Watchmen is basically impossible to adapt to film properly, and despite Snyder's completely unsubtle style of filmmaking, I'd rather see his version over the Sam Hamm script.
oh yeah, out of the past choices he's the best for the job, but I really think the "HE'S SO TRUE TO THE SOURCE MATERIAL!!!" so many people are braying is a bit much, because he's only true to it in a visual sense. It works to have that total sense of brashness if you're doing Frank Miller, but Alan Moore deserves at least a little bit of narrative tact. In a perfect world I'd have gotten a director strong with storytelling to pick this up, but I do appreciate the steps he took to keep at least SOME parts of it intact.
it's such a shame too, since Ozymandias is the most important character to establish in such a short time. Goode was really the only person that I can say I thought was outright bad- even Akerman's occasional overacting was forgivable!
The casting otherwise was really good, especially with Rorschach, Dreiberg and the Comedian, so fucking up on this central of a character is a shame. Maybe it's just me, but it kind of makes me feel more like Snyder really just didn't care about Ozymandias. I'm really sad that my worry of "it's really damn obvious even from the posters how Snyder will handle Adrian" was absolutely right. He really IS just a lame comic book villain now.
Did I tell you I actually had a friend argue that "99 Luftballoons" worked in the movie because it was a song about the Cold War? Yyyyeah.
I know we already complained about this but I really think if they had kept in the scene with Kovacs asking the newsstand guy if his copy of the New Frontiersman was in, we would've gotten the establishment we needed for the paper, and we would have gotten better establishment of Kovacs since you only get a fleeting glimpse of him before he's unmasked as Rorschach. If they had trimmed out like a minute of that sex scene we could have had it but I guess the test audiences wanted those extra moments of Nightowl thrusting.
I was fine with some of the songs (mostly the opening montage, but I digress :y) but besides Hendrix, there were two in particular that irked me more than anything
( ... )
Not that I don't have other comments, but reading your post reminded myself of my steaming hatred for those two specific songs. Anddddd many other songs on the soundtrack. ;;
ugh I KNOW RIGHT every so often something comes up and I'm reminded of a terribly inappropriate song that ended up being used in the movie. It felt like Snyder panicked and ended up just using the first songs that came to mind :( UGH THIS MOVIE
