Some Questions Are Dumb

Here's the subhead (the head is "Blue is the New Black" oh-stop-you-are-killing-me) beneath Maureen Dowd's New York Times op-ed column for today. "Studies show women are getting gloomier and men are getting happier. Did the feminist revolution end up benefiting men more than women ( Read more... )

Please don't hate me after this... beautifultyrant September 20 2009, 17:14:20 UTC
But, I've strangely had two conversations over the last few days on this exact topic. Now, I'm not a feminist. In fact, I'm a blatant sexist. I like doors being open for me, dinners being bought for me, I like wearing pretty dresses and high heels and being an old fashioned, delicate female. My boyfriend is a feminist and our brains don't really agree on a lot of this. Anyway. In these discussions, I was defending my position as a sexist, and I basically said: "The women's right's movement lost us all the nice things. Being able to have a door opened for us, being able to have a man treat us to dinner, even being able to non-guiltily stay home and take care of our children. But we still haven't gotten equal salaries, we possibly never will. We still haven't broken through the corporate or governmental glass ceilings (Hillary, any one?). Why should I give up all the nice things when I never got my rights anyway."

So, there's my thoughts on these.

I don't hate you. You like the shiny paper and the pretty bow oppression comes wrapped in, knock yourself out and take the oppression. But place responsibility for that oppression where it belongs, not on the people who worked and are working to free your ass.

Claro que sí. There is ever an answer for everything in this ages-long game of Heads I Win Tails You Lose we've been playing, and the answer is that the marginalized are always wrong. It's bullshit, of course, but it is difficult to see it for what it is when you've been told your whole life that it is bedrock.

Okay, thanks for talking about this, because messages like that are currently getting under my skin. No, I do not think it is appropriate to blame feminism for the way I am "so angry all the time."
